Man, too many lately. Such a classic sound and band. The Cars crossed a lot of genre’s.

Wow, he must have got Eddie's other ticket. Sad
For such a somber topic, that was a freakin good one.

RIP Rick ... listened to Candy-O till the tape wore out. A definitive sound of the 80's. Getting old sucks, and this list is going to get longer quickly unfortunately.

I still think of the Cars as a late 70s band. Awesome talent,,, RIP Ric

Great loss. The Cars first album was a masterpiece with every song a good one, part of the soundtrack to my life. Glad they were recognized in the Hall of Fame before it was too late except for Benjamin Orr.

I was just thinking about the discography of truly great radio hits The Cars had.... think of how many! Just off the top of my head:
You're all I've Got Tonight
My Best Friend's Girl
Bye Bye Love
Moving in Stereo
All Mixed Up
Let's Go
Candy-O
Double Life
It's All I Can Do
Night Spots
Since You're Gone
Shake it Up
Hello Again
Drive
Magic
You Are the Girl
Strap Me In

...These are all absolute hits that you might still hear on the radio right now. (In fact, I bet most of them are playing on the radio somewhere right now!)

I would do anything
To hold on to you
That's just about anything
Until you pull through
I'd hold on to you
'Til the stars no longer wink
I'd hold on to you
'Til you figure out
Just what to think
'Cause
You're emotion in motion
My magical potion
You're emotion in motion
To me
I would go anywhere
To meet up with you
That's just about anywhere
For one rendezvous
I'd hold on to you
'Til the mountains crumble flat
I'd hold on to you
Until you figure out
Just where you're at
'Cause
You're emotion in motion
My magical potion
You're emotion in motion
To me
I would do anything
To hold on to you
That's just about anything
That you want me to
I'd hold on to you
Until you take it all in stride
I'd hold on to you
'Til you want to stay here
By my side
'Cause
Emotion in motion
You're emotion in motion
To me

Let them leave you up in the air,
Let them brush your rock and roll hair,
Let the good times roll

I agree, that was a line that could only be used once and only in this situation. Very good Void .

I loved the Cars, a HUGE part of our race-travel playlist back in the day. Sad day.

So many parts of my late 70's and through the 80's ...
You forget all of their songs that weren't even hits you sang to. Going through their playlists. So many that were part of my teens. Rough night.

I don't get upset about much but this has really got me. I must be getting soft.

The first time I ever danced with a girl was the 8th grade grad night. I didn't have the guts to ask her myself, so my buddy went and talked to her instead. She came up to me and I somehow managed not to throw up like Stan on South Park. I don't remember the song, but I walked home on a cloud afterward. When I turned on the radio to fall asleep with, I remember hearing "Drive" and to this day it reminds me of her.

I have a really killer track saved to my computer that I'll try to find online for you guys. It's a nearly complete version of "Let's Go" from Candy-O. For music geeks like me, it's cool to hear the differences and imagine what production decisions they were making, then to contrast with the finished album version that we're all familiar with.
The drum tracks and keyboard parts are final and many of the guitar parts are the same but at very different mix levels. Vocals are entirely different and sound like a "placeholder" to me.

EDIT: Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ0NKAPfnGs
Sorry, embed code wouldn't work for me.

SECOND EDIT: OK, maybe the embed code IS working... Now it's displaying for me. Someone pipe up and let me know if you can see it.

you do not have to put in any code anymore, just post the youtube link and the board automatically embeds it, really nice! 👍

Nope, that's Ben Orr. (Bassist.) That was the first time I realized Ocasek wasn't the only singer, in fact. As it turns out, Orr sang a big majority of the songs.

Here's another great Rik Ocasek song from a solo project:

Dam sad. Great band. I remember listening to the Cars almost every morning in my uncles VW Bug on my way to school.
