Reclusive, elusive and dead.

We lost a grand one in him.

I'd be curious to know the percentage of Vital MXers who have read "The Catcher in the Rye".

I have at least four times, I love that book. It was maybe a little ahead of it's time but if it was written any later it wouldn't hold the same substance and sort of mystique that it has now.

Never read Catcher in the rye.

I understand the premise is a loner teenaged male who feels sorry for himself then kills himself or others? Am I right on this?

I have read the Catcher in the rye, first book I read when I moved to the States. I heard it was mandatory for americans to read that book in school, so I felt I had to read it to keep up. I liked the book, really did.

I think it's still assigned reading, but I don' t think kids today probably understand its rebellious tone relative to the time it was written.

the Onion wrote this, which is funny if you have read the book.

Onion.com
CORNISH, NH—In this big dramatic production that didn't do anyone any good (and was pretty embarrassing, really, if you think about it), thousands upon thousands of phonies across the country mourned the death of author J.D. Salinger, who was 91 years old for crying out loud. "He had a real impact on the literary world and on millions of readers," said hot-shot English professor David Clarke, who is just like the rest of them, and even works at one of those crumby schools that rich people send their kids to so they don't have to look at them for four years. "There will never be another voice like his." Which is exactly the lousy kind of goddamn thing that people say, because really it could mean lots of things, or nothing at all even, and it's just a perfect example of why you should never tell anybody anything.
