Question about pocket knives

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good pocket knife to buy. I want to buy one for each of my 2 sons. Something high quality. It would also be nice if I could have them engraved. I always check out the pocket knives when I'm at Cabela's but I don't really know what's good. It also seems like Cabela's puts a high price tag on everything to give the illusion of quality. We already have a ton of the normal pocket knives like the Swiss army and what not. I want something they can keep forever and possibly pass on. Something special.

My favorite quality pocket knife is a Bench Made.

What's your budget? How old are your kids? I love my benchmade mini grip, but there's tons of good options out there.
Buck
Spyderco
Esee
CRKT

Love my benchmade 585 . Free lifetime sharpenings and i think replacement blades are like 15 bucks if you ever need one.

I carry my bench made everyday and know a few who prefer spyderco, but I wouldn’t consider them special. I think something handmade would be a sweet gift

I’ve always carried some $30 gerber from cabelas for close to 10 years.

Not an everyday carry knife but amazing knife for dressing game or trimming in the kitchen .

Thanks guys. I think I've settled on one of the Benchmade minis. They can laser etch text or pictures on the blade. That's a nice little touch for what I'm going for. They seem to be out of stock on just about everything but I'm in no rush. They also had a dealer locator and found one within 10 miles of me. I'm going to take a trip there when I get a chance. Thanks again.

The price is great for a solid knife with a life time warranty. I have had one of these for years. I scrap around and abuse mine at the shop so never carry a high dollar knife.

I had to laugh at that old thread.
"Why carry a knife" "no one here does".

I've had one in my pocket since 2nd or 3rd grade.
Find a use nearly every day.
Been carrying this one just cuz Dad gave it to me and it's cool. Gotta zoom to see the engraving on the handle.

Go for it! Don't let a little thing like fear, or common sense hold you back.

That's great! My kids are 10 and 12. If they don't lose the knives in the next couple years, they'll probably have them forever. We are in the woods for one reason or another about 5 out of 7 days a week. I think they'll love them.

I have a CRKT moxie model. Been a great knife. Not super expensive. But a good quality knife.

I started that thread. I've had a knife in my pocket pretty much every day since around the age of 11. Was just curious how many others still do. Incredibly handy to have.

I've been collecting knives, mainly Buck knives for quite a few years. Mostly 110s and older fixed blades but also a sprinkling of newer ones. This Buck Ultima is about 25 years old with real mother of pearl scales. I used to carry it daily but would also hate to lose it. Fantastic little pocket knife. All I carry nowadays is a small Victorinox. Always have a large folder in my truck for any bigger jobs.Photo

I've always carried cheap knives and would never justify more than $50 for one. Then Santa dropped off this Benchmade 940 and I couldn't believe the difference. Quality is top notch and the lifetime sharpening/warranty makes the price a lot more reasonable.

You don't have to spend a bunch of money for a fun pocket knife. My son is a scout and I have a box full of $10 knifes. If they get lost, or try to cut rocks (yes, it happens sometimes) not a big deal.
Sure, you drop $50 you'll get a good quality knife. I'm too cheap though.

This made me think of a funny story. About 5 years ago I was at St. Louis SX will call getting my tickets. I was getting my id out of front pocket and my pocket knife fell out on the ground. Everybody took a large step away from me. Jeez, acted like I dropped a gun or something. I was pretty high at the time, feeling really paranoid, thinking the TSA was going to grab me for interrogation. Wait...not in airport....at races with 3 beers stuffed in the sleeve of my coat. everybody giving me the stink eye.
puff puff pass. Still have that same pocket knife.

I was really into knives for a while. Benchmade and Spydercos are really good knives, but the Benchmade griptilian really tended to get stiff and gummed up in my experience with everyday carry.

Best bang for the buck imo has been the Kershaw knockout. Assisted open and sharp enough to shave with. Super compact and sits low in the pocket for about $65. Only dislike how flat it is in my hand sometimes but it’s a good carry

Just noticed a spammer brought this thread back up trying to sell sharpeners.

How do these people find these threads?

My post is my opinion. If you don't agree with it, I'm OK with it.

My son works for Benchmade and I can get the deep employee discount but my EDC knife is a $10 Basspro Chinese folder. It drives him nuts. I have this thing though where the more I spend on a watch, glasses or knife, the faster I will lose or smash it. He does like the Mora knives on amazon though. They are hard to beat for a fixed blade knife for $15.

The older I get, the faster I was.

Always have a case knife on me, and a good pen. People always laugh but don’t mind asking when it’s needed.

Got way off into collecting them, they have some super fancy ones, but the one I normally carry has a pocket clip with a stainless blade.

I always loved them after finding a box full of brand new different models on the side of the road as a young boy. My friends always said I was the guy that could win a gun fight with a knife. I had a cedar shed and had a baseball game like in darts but will Gil Hibbon throwing knifes on the side. We all got pretty good but I had the most practice. They have the Mid evil fair at a park across the street and every few years I will go over with the kids and win some prizes.
I use an knockoff auto bench made 940 in black like Jordan above as my go to for daily life.

I don't have to be as smart as you hope to be some day anymore. wink

Another Kershaw fan here. Been carying them for a little over 10 years. Had a Leek for a while but found I was always babying it because of the fine tip though I never broke one. Now carry a Shallot and its plenty beefy. They take and hold an edge very well and have a lifetime guarantee. Ive also carryed a knife every day since jr high and use it pretty much every day for something or another. And speaking of things always in your pocket, I never leave the house without a flashlight, another thing I use everyday for something and dont know how normal people get by without them haha.
