Hi all, curious to see what others are paying around the country. Here in MA we are obviously a very blue state and there are not many things that are not taxed to the highest degree.
We are homeowners roughly 27 miles west of Boston. Used to be kind of country here but more suburban now.
In regards to property tax only we are just under 100.00 per week to the town, 5k per year. We are probably one of the lowest in town. House valuation about 300k..many homes in our area 500-750k. Have friends with pretty big homes and some acreage and they can pay 15-20k year in property tax.
Get close to Boston and it’s crazy.. wife’s grandfather home 10 miles outside Boston sold for 650k just for the lot..got torn down .
If your on town water that’s an extra tax..town sewer extra too.
Most in our area crap in the backyard...private septic...drink water from the front..private wells..
Own a vehicle..excise tax..inspection sticker..cough up some more dough..
Where do you guys stand..anyone got us beat paying more than this state ?

My folks moved us from Framingham in 1974 after declaring MA the "tax you to death state" to CT. Now CT has been declared "Corrupticut". It's definitely bad here but I think California has us beat.

It's unbelievable that people that don't own property can vote to raise taxes on those that do.

Shit , here in Illinois property taxes range by county but mine in Peoria ,Illinois area which is no where close to Chicago are like 2.5% of market value. So on a 300,000 dollar house they are 7,500 per year. they have more than doubled in the 15 years I have been in this house. Have about 8 more years to put up with this than I am retiring and heading south.

One of the main reasons we moved and built here in WV.
Maryland was getting crazy.
Water, maybe 30 a month. Private septic tank.
Trash pick up. Once a week. They take watever we put out there, 32 a month.
With some kind of homestead credit we get, property tax just over 600 a year. Appraised at a bit over 200k.
Main bummer here is the personal property tax. You have to list all your major stuff, cars, boats, RV, livestock.
Mine is maybe 200 a year.
With most, it's not an issue. But get a farmer that has a lot machinery. Or a contractor with a fleet of trucks. It can hurt those guys.

But still, 10 miles away over the Md. line, I hear guys saying they pay 2, 3k a year. That's like 200 a month. 50 a week,
10 a day. Imo, those guys aren't owning, they're renting, from the government.

That’s right, that’s what I say..here if you own a home with no mortgage it’s still about 200 a week to sit in your house...lol..I am looking for numbers because we are looking to get out of here and head south in the next 10 yrs

I've been looking down south also.
But, with this place paid for, I'm thinking why sell it?
Winters suck. The roads suck. But, the people are nice. Hardly any crime. It a safe place.

I'd love to, and am trying to figure out how to, get a place in SE Florida. Even if it's a lot or old house I can park the RV on for 6 months out of the year.

Somewhere between Melbourne and West Palm Beach.
You know, where it's warm, and the beach is white sand, and the Atlantic is emerald green......

But, I'm finding out, Florida is a pretty tricky place as far as tax and residence stuff goes.

Here outside Bel air MD. Assessed value * .013 = prop tax. They voted to raise our assessments last year. I expect my new tax bill to be about 2500 a year on a 1400 sqft townhouse. I'm not complaining though. North Jersey folks pay almost 3x that amount

|

1/8/2019 6:14 AM

I see people wanting to move south to escape high taxes...laughing My house is on the rolls for about 290K(pre hurricane/flood) and taxes were over $7000.00. No curb and gutter streets and obviously a poor drainage system here locally. Post flood, property appraisals decreased 40% but I give it another year before they increase them up and beyond where they were as everyone gets their houses back together.

No state income tax they say. But they sure make up for it in property taxes and business franchise tax. Franchise tax has been a moving target for us. And don't even get me started on the cost of insurance.w00t

Actually, property taxes in California are lower than the national average. It's because of a voter initiative passed in 1978. It would be much higher if not for Prop 13. Get nailed on street sweeper day? $50 a pop. That's so the city can send trucks out to sling the crap from the gutter, on to your driveway or the middle of the street.

2.37% of appraised value here. I cut a check just short of $12k a couple weeks ago. Ouch.

Our new moron .eeer governor that somehow got elected (NOT BY ME OR ANYONE I KNOW) has said that "Everything is on the table, including prop 13" It's already happening for businesses. I know lots of retired people who will be forced out of their homes if prop 13 is yanked. (IMO) that's when this state will turn back into the wild west. Better start investing in precious metal, mainly lead and brass...

My assessment is 1.2% of value. Valued at 270,000. 3400 sq feet on 5 acres. Live in township no income tax except from where I work. 2.5% I pay to the great city of Cleveland....vomit.

But my taxes are only $3,300 per year.

I just moved out of the county to my west that is closer to Cleveland and it was getting out of control. Cuyahoga county (Cleveland) is taxed to death. People were fleeing cuyahoga to go to lake county. Then the morons were just voting for more services and taxes started getting out of control. I got a letter from the county that said. “Congratulations your home is worth 50,000 more this year!” Bout spit my coffee out. The county needed to fund their new gorgeously new administration building. So they were just gonna take the money from me and other home owners.

When I moved to lake county 7 years ago (our first home my wife and I purchased) taxes were $3,600/year. beginning this April they will be at $5700 a year. For a 1700 sq foot house on crawl space sitting on 0.8 acres without public sewer or water. House sold in 4 days. Thank god. Bye bye!! Taxes ran me out. Otherwise would of stayed longer. I put a lot of work into that home and really liked it. But it’s just a house.....

I’m out in the sticks now. Nobody bothers us. Mostly farmers and neighbors that love to rip snowmobiles and ride bikes all over the surrounding 50 acres here. MY KINDA PEOPLE!!! Old mortgage was 2.8% New is 5.1%. So it’s probably a wash. lol. Can’t win!!!

I live in one of the most conservative counties in America (southeast WI) and so our property taxes are very low in comparison to other areas within WI.

We have a 3 year old house on 5 acres with a market value of around $500k-$550k.

Our property taxes this year were $3706.

Property taxes are insane in Texas. Sure, we don't have an income tax, but to be honest I think we have it the worst because income has not kept the same pace as property tax increases. So you are paying more in property tax but income has been the same.

Home valuations keep going up, not because of really any true value, but because the state always needs more and more money to feed the monster. So there is ZERO incentive to keep taxes the same year over year, or heaven forbid a decrease in value, thus resulting in a decrease in property taxes.

Every year my property taxes have gone up. But my salary has not gone up by near the same amount. So in essence I'm almost being priced (taxed) out of my home. What I could afford lets say 10 years ago on my salary I can no longer afford on my same salary because of the continual increase in property taxes. Mortgage has stayed the same. Monthly bills all mostly the same. But the property taxes keep increasing....ugh

Here in MA the depth of the black hole of taxes keeps growing ?. Most all of my friends and I are conservative, there are a lot of us believe it or not up here but are outnumbered by the city dwellers that want more and more services.
MA moon bats just leagilized weed, a nice new tax revenue and gambling casinos more money into the black hole...
Our area also has a town excise tax. You pay the town for having a registered car, truck, trailer, bike etc...if your stuff is new figure hundreds more in tax.
Said vehicles also need an inspection sticker..more money.. and they are strict now..emissions naturally but also will fail you for all kinds of mechanical things as well as rot on the body of a vehicle. My truck has 2 rear plate lights. One worked, one was out, plate still illuminated. Guy was going to fail me but I had a spare with me..crazy..I know there are no walls here keeping me in..lol..there are a lot of great people here and you make a good living, schools and college is great I’m just curious what the real deal cost wise is out there and to make most of you feel better that you don’t live here!! Ha ha ?

I'm not sure whether to be surprised or not that there may actually be someone more of an asshole than Brown was. I guess we'll see.
I think they have to put a repeal of Prop 13 on the ballot, and I doubt CA homeowners will let that one pass.

I'm on a half acre, 4900 sq feet, appraised value $550K...property taxes for the year are $2600.

County thinks my home is $472K...and I'm not planning to tell them otherwise. lol So .55% tax rate.

Looking at what you folks are paying in property taxes makes me like Utah even more!

I swear sometimes I wonder if the whole voting process is a big sham because how could there possibly be THAT many stupid clueless motherfuckers out there. Maybe I'm isolated in a little red bubble down here in south orange county but every single person I talk to about it is saying wtf.... I didn't vote for that jack hole. I haven't met one fucking person, not a soul that likes or voted for him, fuckin not a one. But yet, there he is...

City assessed my place at around $365K and my property taxes are a little under $3K a year. Not the greatest neighborhood though, but it's improving every year.

Our place in California is about the same. A little lesser valuation (in US$), but the taxes are a little lower as well.

I like the signs in yards “not a tax increase”. I want to put a sign up that says....a tax decrease if you vote NO.

I don’t think a lot of people pay attention to it or care really. My sister in law is clueless. Votes for all kinds of tax raising issues in our county and Then she wonder why her escrow account is SHORT every year......then goes “oh well can’t do anything about it. My one vote doesn’t make a difference”so I say to her quit votin then! Lol

Smh.

I pay approx $3500 for a house that assessed at approx $200k but in reality is worth at least $350k-400k. I tell the wife that if an assessor comes around DO NOT let them in the house!!

House worth 295k on less then half an acre. $9800 in 2018. This plus income tax, constantly increasing gas tax and now our new governor wants to copy all of California’s policies.New (Nazi)Jersey were ruled by the people up north as south jersey is usually mostly red.
