Just heard from my mother-in-law, almost got phone scammed. Guy on the other end tried to pass himself off as my nephew, in jail in Mexico, the result of a car accident he was involved in. Thing is the guy had my nephews name correct, and we do and have been vacationing in Mexico for years.

We do try and keep her informed about these scam's, and how they're played, and fortunatley she kept her head on straight and not let the emotional factor take over. Told the caller that she's not sure it's actually him, and pretty certain he's not in Mexico.

After commending her on picking up that it was a scam, I got to thinking how did this guy know what he knew. I'm not sure if it was luck, or maybe form the obit of my father-in-law back in February. Regardless just glad she not going to have that "I got scammed" monkey on her back.

They simply carded him, and had some polite conversation. Just a guess but that scam was in the local paper years ago.

Good catch for sure. I know when I travel. I use travel insurance. Mostly on plane tickets for delays and stuff like that but they also have medical insurance that is available and I always purchase it. It is based on the price of your ticket and reasonably priced. $2100 ticket costs around $110 for both policies. Registering with the embassy is a good idea as well. Kind of a side note, but all of this combined, would eliminate receiving a legitimate phone call asking for money in the event that something happened. You might look into it next time you travel and notify your relatives and such.

I've heard of that scam before. I guess it's a Southwest scam.

We have these calls here in Latvia too. Mostly it`s about a relative being in a car accident.
