When Dale Earnhardt died Keith Olbermann had a kinda public melt-down & shredded NASCAR & the fans for being involved in such a "blood-sport".

I thought he was out of his head & losing his mind over nothing more than a very tragic accident. Period. And I wrote him off as some kinda media-spectacularist-Douchebag.

Well, last-nite, I went thru some of those very same "WTF are WE doing?!" moments when I watched Ryan & Trey BOTH get loaded into ambulances in pretty scary looking shape and tied down to back-boards. Then there's the upset Wife...the Mom that's seen this before...Ryan's kids...your heart just stops...

Well, to Mr. Olbermann I must apologize & say, "I get it."

I still don't agree that you have to dump on a sport or it's fans; but, I understand "how" your thoughts & emotions got you there.

I know I wasn't alone, last-nite, in these thoughts...you could see it on the faces of more than a few of us...even one of the Team owners...all I could do was tell him to "think positive".

And, then I bolted home & hugged my 4 year old & felt hell of a lot better.

Not to minimize any of what happened but these kinds of injuries have been a common occurrence at local mx races ever since I got into the sport. I have personally witnessed two racers die, multiple people get paralyzed and countless broken bones over the years. It sucks but it has been like this for a very long time. Maybe you are just getting old.

Getting older and having kids will definitely change how you view things like this.

Exactly...

Last year the last time I saw a very fast friend alive was when we loaded him onto a helo...on a back-board. Last nite was just kinda harsh & the boys looked pretty beat up.

The coolest thing?

A hug from a 4 year old little girl brIngs it all into perspective.

I've seen a pic that has me knowing that you already knew that.

Kids change your thinking.

The choices you make and what you see have much more meaning.

You are absolutely right, Tex, but even with that said, I guess I'll never be man enough to apologise to Olberman for anything.

Remember Cosell doing the same thing with boxing? Refused to announce another fight after the Larry Holmes - Tex Cobb fight.

Funny thing is that many of us, if we were in Trey's situation, would be thinking of getting back on the bike. Look at Doug Henry...we admire him for his perseverance. Has injury stopped you? I have a War and Peace medical folder, and I never think about quitting. In fact, my dream is to ride until I'm dead...no matter how old that is. Oh, I devote a good portion of my life to my son, but I'm not going to stop living my own life.

Yes, you get back around the guys racing & you rejuvenate...I'm headed to Baja for a few days to chase for some friends (can't ride til end of March). That should get my head back in the game.

What we do IS dangerous; but, it's what we do.

Knowing that Trey & Ryan are gonna be OK helps a helluva lot, too.

I almost died two years ago from internal bleeding (took too much ibuprofen trying to rehab broken bones as fast as I could). When I thought I was huffing my last breaths, I was happy that I did my best by my son, and I experienced anything I had an opportunity to. Like the movie, I'm a "yes" man.

I've had friends die by their own hands. I've had a friend drop dead from a heart defect from birth he never knew he had. I've had friends die rotting away from cancer. I've had friends die from heart attacks...car accidents...drowning...

I'm not going to live my life in fear of death. It's gonna get me one day, regardless what I do, and I have no idea how or when. I'd rather live my life to its fullest every precious second I have and let the future run its course. Fuck Keith Olbermann.

And what? I would prefer to see my son riding some day than to go out and flub a triple that meant nothing to me.

The above basically says we have zero control so fuck it all...live for the moment. I don't agree with that thinking. I'm not going to go out and try to be Josh Hill and go for a backflip because I wanted to get the most out of every second. Most of life is mundane. Washing the dishes sucks, but shit's got to be done in case I want to eat on clean plates tomorrow.

You've had the opportunity to see your son grow into a man. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't trade that for anything. I haven't had that opportunity yet, but I want to.

Ok. Just don't get in your vehicle. I'd bet your chances of getting killed in a car are worse than getting killed on your dirt bike. And, are you avoiding all processed foods? Heart attacks and the health problems associated with them are almost guaranteed to kill you if you don't....

Sorry, but I don't avoid life. But, I'm not an idiot when we do those things. I don't try to be Josh Hill. That's posing a straw man. Big difference between me turning a triple into a double cause I don't want to kill myself and what you're saying.

We ski. We ride dirt bikes. We scuba. I take my son to do all of those things and more. Hell, the kid's flying helicopters for 2 years and he's only 16. The kid has benefited big-time in his experience and maturity because of it.

Now go wash those dishes...but don't slip on any water spilled on your kitchen floor, 'cause you know accidents in the home are extremely common!

That crash was horrific. It always makes you think how lucky we are when we all come close to that point of no return. I've been in a painful head on collision, knocked out cold for 15 minutes on a dirt bike after whiskey throttle sent me out of control and yet it was joy racing with my daughter down an expert ski slope last year that almost killed me. I could see the tree bark and by luck my skies stayed hooked up in the ungroomed snow. I always point my skies as straight down the hill as I humanly can so since I was still in race mode I continued on my quest to beat my daughter who also has a need for speed. I won and next week a woman died in the exact area I almost killed myself. The moral of the story is that anything can happen at any time. Appreciate everything you have in this exact moment. I wasn't injuried in what I consider my closest experience to death. Those racers who lined up after the red flag knew the dangers before and after Canard's accident. We are able to block out our fears of "what if" for the love of doing something we are passionate about.

Strawman? Read what you wrote if you want to find a strawman argument.

You don't hit the triple? Sounds like you live in a fantasy where half throttle is wide open.

Yeah. You wrote a strawman. No doubt about it. My version of wide open is my version. Not yours. Not Josh Hill's. I never said I did backflips. I did say I've been injured and I keep right on getting back on the bike. And, that sure as hell won't end until I'm in the ground. Nothing there that says I do backflips. Not one.

I like to experience a lot, and enjoying riding to MY satisfaction is one of them. I'm still on my bike after injury at speeds that give me an adrenaline rush.

So, are you gonna stay out of that car? Stay away from processed foods? Curious...are you overweight?
