Another fyi. If you use a genuine toyota air filter, and change it every 30k miles, your maf will never malfunction. Those two wires inside the MAF are heated wires. The lint that comes off of cheap filters melts onto the two wires, and insulates them. Look closely at a genuine Toyota filter versus an aftermarket filter you will see lint all over the aftermarket filter you won't see it on the Toyota filter just an FYI

Thanks for the info. I will check to see what air filter they put in. Normally, that would be something I would do but it was in for tire rotation and oil change. They called me and talked me into an air filter and wiper blades. I was at a bar down the street with my golf buddies and my guard was down. It was about 2 weeks later that the CEL went off with the 171 and 174 codes. Coincidence? I saved the MAF and put it in a bag.

If you don't mind I have a question. There is nothing in the maintenance schedule that came with the truck that even mentions transmission service. It just says check fluid level at 60,000. It says the same at 120,000. It only says to replace it if I use the truck for towing which I don't. There is no dipstick just a couple of plugs on the housing. What gives?

If it was mine I would drain and fill the transmission every 30 K. Use genuine Toyota WS fluid. On the transmission pan there are two bolts one is an Allen one is a 14 mm hex. Remove the 14 mm hex, catch what comes out of it and measure it. Now imagine you are standing under the transmission. From the back corner of the transmission pan passenger side go up about 8 inches and then 2 inches toward the rear of the vehicle that will be a 24 mm plug remove it and install the same amount of fluid into that hole. Double check that the two bolts are tight and you're done. Be hospital Clean about the whole thing do not introduce any dirt into the transmission.

Generally it's about 4 quarts of fluid. That Allen is your fluid level check bolt. If the transmission fluid is warmed up, The vehicle is running in park on level ground if you remove that bolt a little bit of fluid should come out.

A lot of people talk about a sealed transmission it's BS. If people never change the transmission fluid they will sell a lot more new trucks and/or transmissions LOL. It's just a different way to drain and fill it is cheaper to do it that way than to have dipsticks in Millions of trucks.

The Toyotas that I see that need transmissions are always the ones with black fluid that has never been changed. My customers that I service there Trans every 30k they last forever. And it only cost 60 bucks to drain and fill. Sorry so lengthy hope this makes sense.

Yes, it does make sense. It will get done on my next oil change and tire rotation.
Thanks again for all the help.

Just be careful who you let work on your truck. Seems like half of what I do is just go behind bad mechanics. If you can find an independent Toyota specialist that has left the dealer, owns his own shop, and does all the work, you will most likely be in good hands.
