New vehicle pros and cons

Edited Date/Time 1/27/2012 1:03am
My buddy claims that anybody that buys new cars and trucks is crazy. I'm not so sure- there is nothing like a new vehicle.
Also, when you drive 4x4 trucks like I do-- you don't know how much a used one has been abused. I bought my '99 Nissan Frontier new and it still runs great at 260,000 miles and 11 years later. Used trucks seem to have issues.
Do you buy used or new?

I buy both. It is nice to have a new vehicle but it's really hard to stomach knowing how much the value drops as soon as you drive it off the lot.

Depends on the deal. Just saw a 45,000 mile 2008 Dodge Ram Quad cab for sale the other day with an asking price of $21,000.00. This truck had a window sticker of approximately 33-34,000 when new. But if any of you remember the summer of 08, Dodge was trying to give this same truck away for $17.999.00 if you financed through them. $18,999.00 cash price or your own financing. There were hundreds of them available here locally, almost bought one myself but ended up getting a $29,965.00 Chevrolet crew cab 1/2 ton for $19,900.00 instead. The Dodge was a lot nicer, but just couldn't do it!

You can usually find a lot of trucks for six to ten grand off towards the end of the year. I have no problem buying used but I'm pretty aware of vehicle issues and quirks. As with anything used, the price has to be right, otherwise just get one of the end of year specials. Also have no problem buying a wrecked one for the right price either. I just finished up a totaled out truck for my youngest son to drive. Damage wasn't too severe, just a cost of repair vs. book value issue. Had the customer retain it from the insurance company and I bought it from him. No salvage or rebuilder title that way.

if you can live with driving something you cannot depend on...have it at it Oldfart.

I don't want to wonder if today is the day I'm walking. If you buy an $800 car here, you will be lucky to make it to the gas station.

I prefer to buy new, but will buy used if the dollars make sense. I drive my vehicles for several years and feel I get my money's worth either way.

I like vehicles that are 2 to 3 years old. Then I drive them until the dome light drags the ground!

if you plan on keeping it for many years, buy new.
I drive a 2002 tundra and it runs perfect.

OR you can buy a 2007-ish model that is loaded for a fraction of the sticker price new. Then again, you pay 7% or so in interrest on the loan. A new one you can get 0%, 1.9%, 2.9%, etc.

Don't buy new, then try and sell within 3 years or you will eat it big time.

Hate to agree with Oldfart, but my 96 s10 was dirt cheap and still rocking 7 years later. My INS is also dirt cheap...I thought we were motoheads man? A moto guy should be able to make anything reliable. I need a new fan motor for my air, but i get laughs when i jump out to turn the air on by hitting the fan motor like the Fonz. I'll replace the motor soon it's cheap and easy. At least with the S10 i can work on it myself, can't work on new crap. I'm saving up some to get a 4 x4, 5000.00 here will get you something really decent and i won't have payments. i don't live to impress and when we get to where we are going, I'll get there just as good as you. Plus i just leave my windows down and doors unlocked, they would rip your new shit apart in my hood and even if you are covered, it's a pain to get stuff fixed. Last semi new car I had was a 2002 Eclipse GT, leather all the options, piece of junk and sucked in the woods....I only kept it about 4 months.

I like both. Gotta have a stable of vehicles to do what you want. Ford 150 to haul the bikes and fishing boat. 2001 Audi A-4 for the SnowBoarding trips and 2010 Camaro for work and chicks. First 2 payed cash for and the Camaro my work pays me mileage on which covers everything for all the cars. I think it just boils down to what works for you.

You should dump the Camaro unless you like trailer trash broads, and there are alot of them around RP and Petaluma.

Any good places to ride around there anymore?

I wont buy used unless I know the owner, and the owner cant be a smoker.
That shit ruins a new vehicle in a day.

You dont have any cash, otherwise you'd buy something better than 800 bucks.

You cant buy a set of tires for 800 bucks.

It really sucks around here for riding now. Used to be able to side sadle your bike down the street to several places that were fun to ride. Like every where else thats a thing of the past.

Or how much money you have, I could buy one decent car or truck, but not more. I go cheap on that stuff so I have cash to go out to eat all the time and do things. Pretty cool you have all those, you been playing any reflex? I'm thinking of getting on in a bit...

I say that it depends on the deal that you can get and the vehicle. Not too long ago you could get a new car or truck for pretty much what you could get a used one for not long before that. I would say get new if you can, but there are really good used cars out there today, especially the high end brands.

Almost all of todays cars and trucks are good for a 100 to 150k, and buying a car or truck with 30k on it is a no brainer for me. With the wife, I buy new so she can have that warm and fuzzy feeling, and I don't have to listen to her every time she thinks something is wrong.

Correction, you can't buy a "new" set of tires for 800 bucks, but when they come on a used car they don't exactly sell for new retail cost.....

I've went the route that oldfart talks about, bought an old Prelude for $1000, drove it for two years around town, sold it two years later for $1200. The only thing I had in it was a cheap set of tires from Discount Tire, less than $400. It wasn't because I "don't have any cash", it's because I like keeping my cash.

Too many folks look at their cars as status symbols instead of what they are, a depreciating piece of equipment. Unless they are classics, they are usually terrible investments.

how long is a new car new?

tons of cash to be saved in purchasing demos, program cars, and low mileage trades.

Pros and cons to both arguments. As mentioned by others, I feel the need to purchase and keep one new vehicle, which I drive until the repair costs or it's reliability become an issue. I also tend to have a stable of "throw aways". I want to know (as much as that's possible when dealing with a machine) that if I got a phone call in the middle of the night that I could drive cross country without even thinking about my vehicle. I do not trust a vehicle that someone else has used/abused for this purpose. Before you call me a scaredy kat...I have driven cross country and all around Europe in cars that I purchased from drunks in bars for less than $200 American. I'm just older and wiser now.

I bought a new Sonoma fall of 2002, last of the V-6's, and I bought a 96 Sonoma on Ebay for $1700 4 1/2 yrs ago, both run great. Like to have something nice for a date or to go on vacation. And something cheep for everyday, we have snow here, and they dump a butt load of chemicals so you need something you don't have to worry about. Some of the deals on new are hard to pass up, but high insurance costs, license fee's etc. really make used a better deal. Lots to choose from. Rebuilders are good deal too. A friend just finished a 2007 Chevy 3500 Duramax fully loaded 3200 miles for about $11,000.

I've had just as many problems with new cars as I have with used ones. You really never know. Only one time did I not regret buying new and that was a Toyota Tacoma that I got 185,000 miles out of.

I just got rid of a Subaru STI this year that I had tons of problems with and was in the dealer "under warranty" all the time. I hated that car for the stress it caused in only 32,000 miles. Problems started in less than 6,000 miles.

We have a BMW 330i that is the biggest pile of sensor replacements I've ever owned, but it keeps running. I hate it too. The service light is on weekly and off to the dealer or ebay I go. Those engineers are true geniuses from a parts and service perspective. If the tranny or engine goes, It's going to the wrecker's, but until then, it's worth it to fix.

Currently driving a used F150 4X4 that has been pretty good so far. I paid $6k cash for it and have had it for four years putting almost 80k miles on it. Other than tires and brake parts, I've only put plugs and coils in it. Only thing I've had that was cheaper to run was a 67 VW bug. I bought that for $100, put $1500 into it and then drove it for 75,000 miles.

Jus' dropped $36k on a 2011 GMC Sierra 2500...for a chase truck...Baja. For the next 100k miles I'm not gonna worry about a damn thing. I'll be pickin' up a 2011 Raptor Super-Crew, too.

No diesel: I'm tired of payin' for that shit! Besides, Cameron tows all the trailers.

Trlr brk, Rr view Cam, HD pkgs...no leather, no sun-roof; but, all the other stuff.

I keep trucks for 3yrs/100k miles.

Period.

After that, I let someone-else enjoy it.

Having the convenience of the factory warranty is worth it. I've done the extended warranty thing; but, by the time they kick in...post 100k...I'd rather jus' have a new rig, anyways.

Is a new truck worth it?

Yes; because, I am.

Bought this one new ten years ago. 2001 F-250 crew cab 4x4 with 7.3 Power stroke. Manual transfer case and manual locking hubs make it perfect for dagging behind the motorhome. Cloth seats, not that shitty ass domestic leather that lasts 15,000 miles before looking all ragged out. About four years ago, some goofy ass kids tried cutting my wife off in a Dakota truck. Didn't work out to well for them, she peeled them like a banana. Phucked the Dakota all up, I just needed some new front sheet metal and left suspension /steering components. Took the opportunity to upgrade to 07 bumper, grill and headamps and some two tone paint. Originally planned on keeping it for ten years, but I can't think of anything currently that would be better. Can haul the whole family and carry or drag anything you can put in it or hook onto it. Gets 14-15 mpg all around. She just rolled 150,000 miles today. Just can't bring myself to part with it, athough I get offers to buy it quite often. Seems the 7.3 is pretty desirable.
