My buddy claims that anybody that buys new cars and trucks is crazy. I'm not so sure- there is nothing like a new vehicle.
Also, when you drive 4x4 trucks like I do-- you don't know how much a used one has been abused. I bought my '99 Nissan Frontier new and it still runs great at 260,000 miles and 11 years later. Used trucks seem to have issues.
Do you buy used or new?

You can usually find a lot of trucks for six to ten grand off towards the end of the year. I have no problem buying used but I'm pretty aware of vehicle issues and quirks. As with anything used, the price has to be right, otherwise just get one of the end of year specials. Also have no problem buying a wrecked one for the right price either. I just finished up a totaled out truck for my youngest son to drive. Damage wasn't too severe, just a cost of repair vs. book value issue. Had the customer retain it from the insurance company and I bought it from him. No salvage or rebuilder title that way.
I don't want to wonder if today is the day I'm walking. If you buy an $800 car here, you will be lucky to make it to the gas station.
I prefer to buy new, but will buy used if the dollars make sense. I drive my vehicles for several years and feel I get my money's worth either way.
The Shop
I drive a 2002 tundra and it runs perfect.
OR you can buy a 2007-ish model that is loaded for a fraction of the sticker price new. Then again, you pay 7% or so in interrest on the loan. A new one you can get 0%, 1.9%, 2.9%, etc.
Don't buy new, then try and sell within 3 years or you will eat it big time.
Any good places to ride around there anymore?
I wont buy used unless I know the owner, and the owner cant be a smoker.
That shit ruins a new vehicle in a day.
You cant buy a set of tires for 800 bucks.
It really sucks around here for riding now. Used to be able to side sadle your bike down the street to several places that were fun to ride. Like every where else thats a thing of the past.
P
Paid $15,700 for this. Perfect condition. Good deals out there.
Pit Row
I've went the route that oldfart talks about, bought an old Prelude for $1000, drove it for two years around town, sold it two years later for $1200. The only thing I had in it was a cheap set of tires from Discount Tire, less than $400. It wasn't because I "don't have any cash", it's because I like keeping my cash.
Too many folks look at their cars as status symbols instead of what they are, a depreciating piece of equipment. Unless they are classics, they are usually terrible investments.
tons of cash to be saved in purchasing demos, program cars, and low mileage trades.
I just got rid of a Subaru STI this year that I had tons of problems with and was in the dealer "under warranty" all the time. I hated that car for the stress it caused in only 32,000 miles. Problems started in less than 6,000 miles.
We have a BMW 330i that is the biggest pile of sensor replacements I've ever owned, but it keeps running. I hate it too. The service light is on weekly and off to the dealer or ebay I go. Those engineers are true geniuses from a parts and service perspective. If the tranny or engine goes, It's going to the wrecker's, but until then, it's worth it to fix.
Currently driving a used F150 4X4 that has been pretty good so far. I paid $6k cash for it and have had it for four years putting almost 80k miles on it. Other than tires and brake parts, I've only put plugs and coils in it. Only thing I've had that was cheaper to run was a 67 VW bug. I bought that for $100, put $1500 into it and then drove it for 75,000 miles.
No diesel: I'm tired of payin' for that shit! Besides, Cameron tows all the trailers.
Trlr brk, Rr view Cam, HD pkgs...no leather, no sun-roof; but, all the other stuff.
I keep trucks for 3yrs/100k miles.
Period.
After that, I let someone-else enjoy it.
Having the convenience of the factory warranty is worth it. I've done the extended warranty thing; but, by the time they kick in...post 100k...I'd rather jus' have a new rig, anyways.
Is a new truck worth it?
Yes; because, I am.
