Neighbors stealing wifi?

My Internet got to acting up, and my phone pulled this up. If the neighbors names are showing up in the network devices does that mean they've been using the wifi, or just simply tried to connect? Wifi does have a password.
I don't wanna go over there and raise hell for no reason, but dammit I'm getting fucking pissed thinking about it.

They should not be able to connect if you are password protected. Most phones and wireless devices automatically scan for the best wifi network so it may just be the device scanning. I know when my wireless devices turn on I can see my neighbors networks but it then automatically connects to mine. I am by no means an expert but try changing you password to see if it makes a difference. Or it could be your phone just showing their network is in range.

I hope it's just their stuff searching for networks.

I got this pulled up because I tried going to facebook and got a "warning attackers are trying to steal your information!" Well I get this same bullshit message every time I connect to the wifi at work, mcdonalds, etc. So I tried vital.... and that page pulled up. Shows my stuff is connected as well, and I know I can't connect to their wifi.

You can probably download the app for whatever Wi-Fi router you are using. I can see everything hooked up to my Wi-Fi.

If you really want to fuck with people go buy a wifi device that can perform "Containment". They are common in the business world when you want to protect against rogue wifi devices on your network. There is a feature to perform containment of wifi devices off your network as well.

So basically you "contain" all of the SSID's your wifi device sees. Once they are contained, a user cannot connect to those SSID's. It will popup a password box to authenticate the user, but it's never able to authenticate.

I don't recommend doing this unless you have a neighbor you hate. Tongue

Our neighbors were doing that. I didn't have the network protected, but it is now. No more piggybacking.

Regarding the original question, if they got an IP address on your network then they either know your password or you have something misconfigured to not require a password, in which case the neighbor might not even realize they are connecting to your Wifi. So, you might want to go easy on them before you get all the facts.

Your phone will show all wifi networks within it's range. Just punch up wifi. The list you posted looks more like a connected devices list from your router. Not sure how your phone would have access that info. The first item on the list is your cable TV system. It's a direct connection. Everything else is wifi. Which of the devices do you recognize? Do you know who Anderson, Christy, Rodney and Carter are?

Anderson is me, Christy, Carter, and Rodney are the neighbors (one house)
So they were connecting to my wifi? ATT replace the modom today because the wifi has been awful lately and crashing alot. Got a new password with it. Gonna have to see if I can pull that page up again and see of they're still connected.

If they got IP addresses, which the screen shot shows they did, then they definitely were connecting to his network. They either have his password, or his configuration is not exactly what he thought it was.

New router and password should end it. Make sure you do not allow "guest users" on the new setup.

Yep they were definately using your bandwidth. If you have children it's not going to be long before the neighbor kids are on your wifi again. You'll put your kids devices on your wifi and then they can see what the password is (you can view network passwords on most cell phones) and give it out to their friends.

The easiest way to solve that problem is to restrict access by MAC addesss. If a device isn't on the approved list, it can never connect, even with the password.

I would second the points that if they are showing up with IP addresses they connected at some point. Maybe do a hard reset, change password and check the connections again in a couple days.

Helped a friend password protect his wifi cause he thought his neighbors were stealing it. When I asked him what he wanted to name it he said "PayUpSucka". Couple months later went back and another network popped up that said "PaidUp".

Just log into your router and you can see what devices are connected. If they have an IP, they are on your network. Lots of people have a password protected wifi, but don't password protect the router. You can log into plenty of routers just by using admin as the username and password.

Did they replace the modem or the router? Your issue with the neighbor thieves is not the modem. It's the router. Have you been able to pull up that same page on your phone again? Did it just happen before or did you do something to get to that information?

I've got mine set up as "Pretty fly for a WIFI"

Never had any issues with people stealing it, I left the original password that looks like someone smashed their face into the keyboard
