Both of our safes took on water with the recent hurricane and my large one is scheduled to be picked up and taken to Houston to be rebuilt on the interior. The wife's on the other hand was not worth the two way trip and cost to refurbish as it would come in right at the cost of replacement. Decided to tackle it myself. Gutted it and scraped out all remaining fire rock, cleaned up a little rust to the waterline and coated the affected areas and bottom with POR15. Glued in some 1/4 inch drywall to allow an air gap (not sure if that helps) and then two full layers of 5/8 fire rated drywall.

The door had no interior drywall so I glued in 1/4 inch where I could squeeze it in.

Cut a 5/8 finish panel to fit the inside door area and overlaid a piece of 1/4 inch to build it up where I could face it with cedar and still slip the panel in place.

Anyone got any good ideas for lighting that won't look like ass? Wife uses it mostly for stuff other than guns so it will have about 5 shelves in it. Would like to be able to light it all up.

My dad just used a bunch of those LED strips under the awning on his camper . They worked out great ,they change about 30 different colors and the strips are cut to length.

He did one solid strip across the roller of the awning ,you can see here they are plenty bright enough,it's a flexible ribbon too which is nice ,you could do the inside border of the door and not even see the strips(guessing there is a small lip on the front wall) his turns on and off or color change with a small remote ,you can do some other shit like have them change colors automatically ,I'm guessing white would be the most ideal.

Best option would be LED strips. Small, easy to install and bright.

They actually make LED kits for safes that are very inexpensive with motion sensors. You open the door and the LED's come on...call one of your local safe dealers and you can probably find one for a lot less than dealing with the hassle of piecing together your own system.

Cedar arrived the other day so today some progress was made. Back, sides , ceiling, door and removable floor panels are in and done as well as five shelves now glued up and drying. Will work on the LED strip lighting and accessories for her jewelry next.

Gorgeous! Looks awesome.

How did your vintage bikes weather the flood? Were those outta the water?

You just wander back in after a year and no mention of nothing? No Harvey Weinstein basement stories or anything?

The inside of that safe is nicer than the inside of my house.

Georgie, thank you, congrats, congrats and congrats. Busy man with all good things going on there!Smile

Not a whole lot went well around my house during the flood except for the fact that it only got as deep as it did. Able to salvage most everything above 24-28 inches. Everything below...screwed. Many people got it a lot worse than us. Also, it was only our house. Business and all rentals survived pretty much untouched. It could have been a whole lot worse as we don't have flood coverage for a lot of what we own.

Thank you! Thank you for your support. It's something I've wanted to for a while now and just blessed at the opportunity to be a commissioned officer. I can use my civilian skills to the advantage of the army and the country.

@steed I now know why people say "best job I ever had."
Newmann i'm Glad you managed well, or not too bad. All
Those vintage beauties you have I just have nightmares those might be lost. After I saw your pics I bought flood insurance.

JRT anytime you're in Cleveland Ohio or near don't get a hotel you can stay at my house!
