A flat Earth and steam power, oddly appropriate. RIP

Had to be quite a ride down.

The fact that he had the parachutes out in the open for the wind and thrust to catch kinda says a bit about him.

Why wouldn’t he put it in a pod with a pneumatic chute ejection system or something.

I hate to say it was kinda meant to be, but it was meant to be. Lol

I assume a glitch caused the chute to deploy too early. This wasn't his first launch.

Or maybe a little 'concave' now...

While he didn't learn if the earth was round or flat...he did find out that the earth is incredibly hard!

Pretty wild that in the 50s, building a rocket was one of the nation's most expensive programs, that took the worlds smartest engineers. Now, some guy built one in his garage.

Plenty of people built rockets in the 50's with their leftover lunch money.

Read "Rocket Boys" to see how children managed to do it.

Not manned, sure, but this isn't even remotely close to what NASA did in the 50's.

Mad Mike was an old school daredevil, much like Evel Knievel. Evel was lucky not to have suffered the same fate in his steam powered rocket.

Yes, I meant more on the manned side. This Hughes guy was trying to get close to space in something that was built in his garage, vs when Sputnik was put into orbit, it seemed unimaginable to most of the worlds population.
