All you MTB guy's!

I have a question for you, how long does your rear cassette (Grears) & chain last?

I have a Diamond Back Recoil 29'er & I just ride the green belts around here.

It mostly paved & I try & ride it every day, about 11 miles.

But I only get about 500 miles or so out of a rear cassette & chain, should I be getting more?

I try to clean the chain & lube about every 50 miles.

Please give me any tips that you think might help!

Thanks In advance

Howard.

What cassette/chain? I actually don't track miles on my stuff very well but my xo1/xx1 drive parts last very well.

That seems really unusual, especially considering the type riding you do and the fact that it's well-maintained. I've got Sram Apex stuff on my 13' model road bike and I guarantee you that thing has got well over 5000 miles on it. Obviously, something is amiss, shouldn't be wearing that quick.

I'd also like to know what brand you're using, and what the setup is (e.g. 2x10, 3x10, etc.).

Are you sure the chain and cassette are worn out, and you don't just have an out of tune drive train? Did you measure the chain stretch? It could also be a cable tension issue, bent rear derailleur hanger, axle not sitting square in the dropouts, poorly adjusted derailleur, etc., that is causing it to feel worn out.

I have 1269 miles (95% single track) on my current XT cassette/KMC chain and it's still going strong. I don't really keep track of mileage on my road bike but I get at least a couple of years out of an Ultegra cassette.

I saw "just ride the green belts" and thought BigMaico was getting ready to offer gear cleaning services like our friend in Derbyshire (LocalRider). 😆

Spoke whit a friend & he called me a dumb shit!

Said that I needed to clean the hell outta the chain & derailleur, I told him I was.

He said it's not clean enough & that the derailleur was gummed up & sticking, So I got a brush & a can of degresser & went to work!

Spent 30 minutes cleaning every & it's been working fine for the last week!

Don't lube your chain as heavily as you would a motocross bike. I use some moly-style heavy lube, let it penetrate, and then wipe it all off - as much as I can get. As long as a few drops get into the links, that's all you need.
