How gnarly are these little things ? Their can lay dormant for decades and still be viable. Crazy...

Have you ever heard of tadpole shrimp? Even some of our staff who have worked in the Mojave Desert a while had not seen these creatures before. After a recent summer rainstorm, our Data Scientist discovered these tadpole shrimp in a flooded lakebed that just before the storm was an expanse of dried out, cracked mud. So, how do these shrimp manage to hang out when their home is baked with 100-degree temperatures for weeks, leaving them with little water to be found? The adults do need water, and will get by in small potholes and ephemeral pools that fill seasonally. But their adaptations to long periods of dry, hot conditions are their tough eggs that can be viable for decades, and their rapid growth once young shrimp hatch. They can eat 40 percent of their body weight each day, so grow to adult shrimp in 2-3 weeks - taking advantage of the short time water may be present! These small crustaceans that look like tiny horseshoe crabs are believed to be among the most ancient species on Earth, having appeared millions of years ago!

What if these are new mutated versions that grow to be 15 feet long ? And they're mission is to save the planet ? First thing on the list to go ? Us LaughingLaughingLaughing

Grinning I was thinking turkey but that doesn’t look like a place turkeys would hang out. I’m guessing there’s some birds that feed on these shrimp?

Cicadas only come out every 17 yrs, weird looking Beatles. Same with Gypsy moths too, nasty caterpillars that end up squashed all over the place.

That is actually amazing. How they survive in hot , sun baked clay ground for months on end , and then just become mobile once water hits them again?? It's incredible how life works. Basically a miniature horse shoe crab is what they look like. And until now , I had no idea they were in the desert. DizzyDizzy

Trippy little fuckers. The article said "They can eat 40% of their body weight per day and be full grown adults in 2-3 weeks" Next question I guess is where the fuck do they find 40% of anything to eat in that godforsaken place ?
Do they eat dirt ? Wtf could they possibly find to eat ?

Looks like you can order a kit like Sea Monkeys on Amazon. Pretty cool. I might give it a shot using a 5 gallon tank.

$11.00 to hatch 3 eyed dinosaurs, watch them play and your biggest commitment is 20-90 days ? Done and done dude do it. Start a thread, lets watch them hatch and grow. How could you possibly go wrong LaughingLaughing

Seems odd that the eggs can be viable for decades, come to life with a little water, then only live for 3 months ? They wait decades to live 3 months ?

Cicadas- so if they hatch every 17 years, why do we have them every year? Are there different families assigned different years?

Thought it was going to be this guy.

From 2018, but still fun to see how long these things will sit dormant before they decide to take a stroll.

There are many species. Some are yearly while others brood only at certain times years apart.

Not far off, actually. They have “broods” which are like collections of cicada families that share life cycles. Here’s a link with more info.

We get cicadas every year.
Probably why I have been seeing Mississippi Kites all summer for the first time. They like to eat cicadas evidently.
Well, they're here every year.

Cicadas were great fun as a boy.
I'd go swipe about 10' of thread from mom's biggest spool, catch a bug, tie him off, and have a living kite for a while.
Fly that sumbitch until he wouldn't.
