I think it's time for a new toy , I'd like to get a lever action in 45-70 ,just curious if you guys ever put those scary black rifles away and play cowboy once in awhile.

I love the Henry's with the silver receiver, I'm getting one in .44 https://www.henryrifles.com/rifles/henry-big-boy-silver/. I already own a .357 Rossi now which is fine, but you get what you pay for... The overwhelming consensus seems to be that Henry's are fantastic quality and you can't go wrong as far as that side of things are concerned. However not everyone is keen on the loading system (no loading gate).

Henry offers an alternative to bluing or plating that looks absolutely gorgeous, they leave the heat treat finish and it has a goldish/blue/bronze marble look from the old school days of gun building.

Have you checked your local Wal Mart? They have had new Marlins on clearance for $280.00. Now these are new Marlins, not the trusty old good Marlins but it is a cheap entry into the 45/70 if your store has the clearance price. Some do, some don't.

I'll second the Henry's. Beautiful guns and made here in the US. Smooth lever action and an amazing trigger right out of the box. Purists hate the fact that they do not have a loading gate but unless you are worried about topping off ammo in a gun battle...lol.

45/70 ammo is quite pricey. Any reason you are stuck on that caliber? Our Henry 357 Magnum/ 38 Special shoots on the cheap. I mentioned Wal Mart up above, they also carry Henry's now.

45-70 or 30 30 would be ideal for using it to hunt whitetail once in awhile , I think there are a few other choices of ammo that work out to 100 yards on big game but those 2 seem to be the most popular.

If you decide on the 30/30 thing, you can get the Mossberg 464 for cheap, and its a quality piece for the money. I bought my son one before he was deployed in the USMC, we like it. I have it on a gunrack in our Polaris Ranger to shoot stinking 'yotes or wild dogs going after my cows.

I put together a chart showing the different brands and profiles:

Always kinda partial to pre '64 Win 94 in .32 win special. Can't beat the old Marlin (guide gun?) for a useful 45/70, but if you can find a M-1886 Winchester in 45/70 for a historical example of the gunmaker's art. Industrial craft to a degree hard to imagine now.
Turnbull Restoration in Bloomfield NY probably has a few. Or 45/90, 40/82, 40/65 and the like. All kinds of funky calibers to play with. Big lead, slow movin'!

I won a $400.00 gift certificate to Academy a while back. Added a little to the ammo fort. Would post a pic, but some people would be triggered and have to go to their safe spaces. LaughingLaughing

I like Marlin .35 as well. Had a Marlin and Winchester 30-30 but always liked the .35 better. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot the new pointed to lever action bullets yet, still using the Remington 200gr core loct .

The only gun I currently own is my grandfather's old lever action Marlin 308. It's probably the only gun I'll never part with and not only for the sentimental reasons but because it's a blast to shoot.

My dad gave me a Savage 308 lever action. I think he bought it in the 70s. Shoots straight....lol. That's about it.

Henry 44s are very nice....

Have spent some time loading 45/70. Great caliber but not user friendly. Have had a few lever guns in 30-30. Kind of expensive to do any real shooting. Have always thought a lever gun in 44 mag would go well with my 3 screw super Blackhawk in 44 mag. Cheap to reload.

X2. Moose go to gun. Thick bush, 50-100 yd shots. Don't want to chase animal in bush. 400-450 grain. Plus fun to boot. Not as accurate as 300wsm. But tried, proven. Have the Stainless version. Cool

I've had a Marlin 336C in 30-30 for years now. Excellent gun and very easy to clean, only three parts! It's my brush country deer gun. It's put a lot of fresh venison in my freezer.

Just picked this up 30 mins ago and couldn't resist some pics. It's a Winchester 94AE in .44 with a whopping great 24 inch barrel. I really wanted the Henry tbh but man.. in the end I just couldn't quite justify the expense. Still, this a very nice 2nd choice and an immaculate example. Also comes with some peephole sights which will be useful in gallery comps. (Bluing looks a bit weird in the pics for some reason, probably should've turned the flash off).

5 Seconds in the house and I was already finding white hairs stuck to it...

Those old black powder guns can shoot! I used to do a black powder match once a year at Pala (45-90). This is back looking shot from the second furthest target and we shot from the arrow. No I didn't win, my uncle did.

It was the last one they had at the store i was at . I'm checking it out and a guy walks up ,he wants to finger bang it after i'm done looking . I didn't go there with the intention of really spending any money ,mostly just the gift cards . Quick decision , i decided to take it.

Yeah, obviously there's a chance they may not have any left. But if there is one, I'll probably pick it up since I have a couple of gift cards I need to get rid of.

Thanks for reminding me that Gander is going out of business, btw. Tongue

Come out here X, and you can hunt real white tails, not those little German Shepard sized ones down east. Bring this though, so you won't piss 'em off and put 'em on the run with the first 3 hits.

The thrill is in the kill, not chasing the fucker with a flesh wound for six hours. Alternatively, I've had great success with the front end of a Freightliner. Six confirmed kills, actually, and one coyote. Nothing with the Pete yet.

It's callled Color case hardening, I've had a few riles with it & it's just gorgeous.
