I lived in USA for 3 years.
Other than that I felt just as safe.
For 2.5 years I lived in Nantucket. We didn't even lock doors at night.
Mainland was no different, I felt safe during my trips. Never once had any problems.
I remember like today the day I came back. It was the end of November, rainy and dark day. Everything seemed dark and gray. Quite a shock. Now Latvia is nothing like it was bask then. Everything is 1000 times better now and I don't regret my decision to come back.
I could stay in USA, had an awesome job in Nantucket. My boss begged me to not leave, but I was too home sick.

Only surprising thing there was the iron curtain looking security in the subways. Still had fully automatic weapons and randomly checked for tickets. Yes, I was chosen. A little nerve wracking to say the least. Similar to crossing into East Germany in a night coach on the trains. One year post communism and they still looked and sounded like the SS. Full on Alsatians, guns, and loud voices. Intimidating.

Latvian MEP Artis Pabriks said her country was not "opposed" to the reception of refugees, but plans are underway to build a huge barbed fence along its border with Russia to stop illegal immigrants from gaining entry.
My grandfather, on my moms side, was born in Latvia.
Late 1800s, at 12 years old, killed his father in a fist fight.
Said he just had gotten tired if being put to work, having his money taken and then being beat by his dad.
Got a job as a cabin boy to beat the law, in a place called Rega or Riga, sailed the seas for the next 30 years.
On a call to the port of Baltimore, he met my grandmother, who's family had a tradition of giving a portion
of the farm to the siblings that married and wanted to stick around.
He jumped on it, built a house by hand, and lived large, fishing and crabbing the Chesapeake, for the next 35 years.
Used to think, as a kid, mainly because of his accent, he wasn't the smartest guy on the block.
But looking back, especially seeing what he came from, shoot, he was the smartest guy on the block.
