What's up dudes, I'm in need of a laptop that will mainly just be used for podcasting, internet surfing, and the occasional video/photo edit. What should I go with that isn't going to set me back a fortune? I don't need anything crazy nice, but obviously don't want anything slow. I also can NOT stand touchscreen anything, so touchscreen capable laptops are not an option. I'm hoping for something even refurbished/used in the $300 or less range. Let me know what you guys think, thank you in advance.

If you don't want anything slow I think you're going to have to look for something in the $500-$700 range. Anything below that will more than likely run on the Intel 3 chip or the AMD variant which is slow to begin with. If you're trying to do multiple things at once forget it. It won't enough power to keep up with what you're doing.

I'd suggest looking for something that runs on the Intel 5 chip at the minimum or whatever the AMD variant is.

I don't know anything about Apple products but I know that you won't find what you're looking for within that budget.

As far as brands I use a Toshiba and it hasn't let me down. Also had good luck with Asus.

Good point. I'll try to find some with the Intel 5 at least. I've come across some Asus that seem nice, but admittedly I don't know shit about any of it. And yeah, I'm not interested in Apple products at all.

An apple is awesome for porn it’s like having sex with a hooker and having a full body condom on your like Teflon and shit gonna stick..... where as any windows machine is like going bareback on a trip of dirty Mexican hookers it’s gonna be fun for 5 minutes until all the nasties kick in. Good luck with your search Smile my 2 cents if it’s not an Apple it’s a lemon Smile in all seriousness tho get an Apple you’ll never look back. Ok now all jokes aside don’t get a windows laptop unless you have hours of time free to fix the phuquing thing every week then defrag it every other week and don’t forget the family of anties you will need like male ware spy ware hijack ware and virus’s. And remember 99% if us watch porn the othe 1% lie about it.

Honestly, never liked MacBooks. I have zero issues with my MSi Gaming Laptop.

If you are editing videos and such, you want at least an i5 and an integrated graphics card if you can get it. I’d shoot for an Nvidia card, but AMDs aren’t bad; Nvidia seems to have the edge over them.

What software are you using for editing? They will list minimum requirements you should shoot for.

Stick away from HP, Dell, or Alienware. ASUS laptops are good and have good warranty. I am partial to MSi since they have a good warranty and specs for the price.

Get a cheap chrome book. Don't get a mac. We use Microsoft Surface tablets at work and folks love them. Costs more. Asus makes decent cheap laptops as well.

Look here:

https://m.newegg.com/ProductList?preDescription=&canPowerSearch=True&po…

They are gaming laptops, but most all of them have good specs. You will want a lot of storage if you are editing videos. Most also have good CPUs that will keep up with anything you throw at it, and the graphics card will help when it comes to editing.

Plus side of the gaming laptops is a good deal of them have full size keyboards, good speakers, and are easy to upgrade and fix if they do break.

Thanks guys, I ended up finding an Asus gaming laptop on ebay for $395 on my lunch today, so I went with that. Has i5, and it should be here this week.

Hence the reason I wrote "occasional video/photo editing". Not my main focus here.

I shoveled out more cash on a laptop than I ever have recently and it appears that you get what you pay for. This Dell XPS 13 is the best computer purchase I have ever made, laptop OR desktop. 8 cores, 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD drive. The first boot was with a Linux installation DVD where I wiped out whatever they had on it and put a decent operating system on it. Smile From power button press to logon screen is about 10 seconds. I did fork out 2k though.

I have the same thing. A bit slow booting up but otherwise works well. May have to try Linux at some point. I only occasionally use the touchscreen.

I've used a Surface Pro and a Surface Book. I like the tablet versatility, but the Windows 10 on them is a little different than on a desktop or laptop and it results in a few odd quirks. I didn't realize that there was a difference until I tried running my security camera software on them and it wasn't compatible with the Surface version of Windows 10.......

What version of Windows do you have?

We use Windows 10 Pro only. I have Win 10 Pro on my Surface pro at work and Windows 10 Pro on my Desktop at home. They are the same.

All of mine are "Windows 10 Pro" also, but their are some quirks with the "mobile" version (even though my Surfaces don't actually SAY mobile on the operating system). It has to do with the tablet functionality on the mobile versions of Windows 10. I didn't even notice it until my security camera software wouldn't work well on my Surface. I have found that my Surface also needs some tweaks to view an ERP system like Infor LN, etc.

One thing that drove me crazy with my Surfaces in tablet mode was when the screen keyboard would switch between upper and lower case after signing on. My security for some of my stuff requires me to use upper case letters for my initial password, and if I don't take off the caps lock before actually signing in, it sticks in caps lock for the whole session. It took me a while to figure out that I had to switch off caps lock before hitting enter, but when I remember to do that it works fine.

I just bought a $250 acer windows from Walmart. It’s suprisingly good. It’s light. It’s fast. Has great specs. Slim light design. Great reviews. All for 250 freaking dollars. Couldn’t believe it. Hope it works out long run. Bought for my kid but I would use myself. Has a great trackpad also. Better than some 1000 ones I’ve used.

Sounds like a good choice. What are the specs?
