Hope all is well.

Good, we don't get them here so I have no gauge.

That is one thing I'd like to expierence one day, away from anything tall though.

I was getting reports of 5.0, but a 5.8 is a pretty good little jolt.

I can't imagine what that must feel like.

So, when is it really bad? 6.0? 6.5? I don't really understand how the scale translates to damage.

Hurricanes and tornados I get, earthquakes, not so much.

I'm in Upland which is about 10-15 miles from the epicenter in Chino Hills so we felt it pretty good. It was a nice strong rolling quake, but the kicker is how long it lasted. The ground swaying from side to side for a good 20 seconds is a weird eerie feeling. You're always thinking that each quake is a precursor to the BIG one that could hit any second.

That one was at the point of, "Uh-oh...I hope this doesn't get worse."

You're also thinking, "Hmm...where's the epicenter, and how much worse is it there?"

Power went out at work in Brea, so I came home to check the damage.

I live probably 6 miles from the epicenter, in Yorba Linda.

Lots of stuff fell over, but the only real damage was my daughter's Martin acoustic.

It was leaning on the liquor cabinet, and bottle of scotch fell and punched a hole in the body.

The scotch is fine, though.

Our OC office was evacuated due to damage. Plaster and roof tiles were falling. They are still not back in the building.

The Richter scale is a measurement of the magnitude of the energy - so it doesn't relate directly to damage. Damage is related to intensity of ground motion and is dependent on a lot of things. Mercalli shake maps are used to correlate intensity of the vibrations with certain locations.

The Mercalli scale is I to XII, which is used for damage assessments. A Mercalli VII would be expected to cause damage to weak masonry but not to wood framed structures. There's a good wiki on Mercalli scales.

Northridge in '94 was a 6.7. I think the Mercalli scale hit between IX and X in several locations in the San Fernando Valley.

I was mtn biking in Aliso Woods when it happened. Sounded like a bulldozer was approaching from off in the distance. I had no idea at the time that it was a quake.

So was that the one that flattened the freeway during a big baseball game?

Honestly, I'm not sure which building, but the name of the law firm is Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith. Are you in Fashion Island area or over by southcoast plaza?

It was pretty intense at my place in Temecula but then I live on a pile of rocks so I feel just about everything. It hit with a decent jolt, rolled a bit then subsided....for about 2 seconds then it hit again only more intense and it did last awhile. No biggie but the length of it was sorta impressive. Most dont last that long.

Its kind of amazing that something can be so powerful that tens of millions of us can feel the same thing at the same time and yet no real damage occured. Shake Rattle and Roll. Smile

Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; in terms of energy, each whole number increase corresponds to an increase of about 31.6 times the amount of energy released.

I was in the 6.9rs world series deal. bout 35 miles away from the epicenter. rock and roll big time for sure where i was.

A 6.0 ain't no thang...a 7.0 will fuck you up...and yer world along with it. and 8.0 I can't imagine.

I'll take any release of fault line pressure up to 6.5, after that, hope you have homeowners insurance.
