Meaningless? Wait a minute.
Snapchat lost 6% or 1.3 billion in value after Kylie Jenner stopped doing snapchat.

Weird world, ain`t it?

There's no way that drag queen has 6% of the total amount of Twitter users quitting, no way.

^Snapchat, not Twitter. Do these kind of stats make her even more profitable? I’ve always wondered if a celebrities social media following holds some sort of value?

Get this, the whole social media thing is so crazy....this dude on YouTube (ya YT isnt exactly social media, but you get my drift) makes $18,000 a month and all he does is film when exotic cars are delivered to peoples homes / garages. There is actually quite a few guys who do this but this guy is the biggest. College Degree, great job and quit it all to become a full time YouTube VLOG'er. He gets 9 MILLION views per month and flys around the world.

Blows my mind!!!!

There's this 6 year old kid who literally reviews toys and made like 6 million smackers last year. It's called Ryan's Toys review. Toy companies send him free toys and he plays with them. Kids go crazy over that stuff. What. The. Fuck.

Yeah it holds value. It’s called “influencing” and it’s a type of advertising. Basically companies pay big money to people with a large social media following to promote their product without it really coming across as a typical ad. The “celebrity” will post something along the lines of “Headed to the gym again, my new Fitbit is really keeping me motivated!” or they’ll post a selfie of themselves and just have the product strategically placed in the photo where all the followers can see and think “Kylie Jenner uses _________ .”

As far as the value, I’m sure they place a dollar amount on each follower, however the number of followers isn’t(or shouldn’t be) the most important factor when deciding a “celebrity’s” value. The most important thing is how loyal the followers are, meaning how likely they are to copy what the “celebrity” does and buy ______ product. The more loyal the follower the more likely they are to purchase the advertised product. For example, one person has 1m followers but is only able to convert 100k(10%) of them to purchase, whereas another celebrity only has 500k followers but is able to convert 250k(50%) to purchase, the one with 500k followers holds a greater value.

I still don't understand 10 year olds needing a cell phone, especially smart phones. Like really, go play outside. Growing up we lived out in the country and there was always something to do. BMX, dirt bike, pick up hockey, chipping golf balls in the backyard, just walking around talking about random shit, bike rides a 2am, etc.

I need a time machine.

Yeah, it's crazy. I had a group of 5 of my best buds and we were outside causing a ruckus every single day. We would find random places in the woods and start building jumps for our bikes. I couldn't tell you how many random club houses we built out in the middle of the woods (of course they never lasted because we were kids and sucked at building them.) I rarely see kids out even riding bicycles anymore. I had an original PlayStation when they first came out but the thing rarely ever got played with. We would hang out and mess around with it for a little bit but always ended up back outside doing something.

Same here. It was backyard football in the fall. Driveway hockey in the winter and baseball/bmx/moto in the spring/summer time. You didn’t even need to call or now “text” your buddies. Just Woke up and rode your bike to their house and knock on the door. Or they would already be outside playing or knocking at mine waking me up.

Yeah, all of the above. I liked that I could jump on a dirtbike and head straight from my yard into the hills. Hiking, fishing, camping, canoeing. Two big rivers and a smaller river and creek running right through town. 5 minutes and you were in the wilderness.

I don't want there to be another recession because it fucks everything up. But when the next recession inevitably comes, I will take some measure of delight when these Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram celebrities have to get actual jobs and become contributing members of society. Blows my mind the amount of money people make for churning out meaningless, garbage "content" on social media.

They actually may be the biggest winners of a meltdown.

With less spending everyone could be fighting to maximize their “advertising” effectiveness. These stupid pseudo-celebrities might be more effective than traditional methods, unfortunately.....

So now Rihanna called out Snapchat for the add they ran and Snapchat lost 800 million dollars in value.

The ad in question was for the mobile game "Would You Rather?," and it presented users with two options: "Slap Rihanna" or "Punch Chris Brown."

The question should have been more specific. I'm all for slapping Rihanna on the ass and punching Chris Brown in the face but I'm not down with slapping Rihanna's face and punching Chris Brown in the ass.

I find society's infatuation with social media and celebrities to be outright stupid and don't belong or follow any of it. If all social media and "Hollywood" folded up tomorrow, I wouldn't miss it for a minute.

It amazes me that one Kardashian can do a damage of 2 billion with just one tweet. Fucked up.

All of the social media companies are built on sand. They offer little value and are completely dependent on fickle people's commitment to popular fads.

Not a fan at all. My kid wants to watch it all the time and I say no.

Edward Snowden called it correct today when he said the following...

Businesses that make money by collecting and selling detailed records of private lives were once plainly described as "surveillance companies." Their rebranding as "social media" is the most successful deception since the Department of War became the Department of Defense.

Facebook makes their money by exploiting and selling intimate details about the private lives of millions, far beyond the scant details you voluntarily post. They are not victims. They are accomplices.

Pretty much sums things up.

While I totally agree with mxdude's sentiment... your post is brutally accurate.

It says more about the glorified Casino we call the stock market. As for investing in Snapchat, live by the sword, die by the sword, I guess. And I am pretty sure the fat-ass pics of Kim Kardashian are the photoshopped ones, or at least more photoshopped ones.
