I’m considering picking up a 2006 for transporting 2 bikes to track and races? I’m wondering if the bed width is too small to get 2 bikes in on a regular basis? Does the bed storage space hold gear and a toolbox comfortably? thanks ...

Bed is probably as big as my crew max Tundra. Of course that isn't saying much...lol.

Two bikes will fit no problem, we had one for a while and loved it.
The "trunk" is bigger than you would expect, the only problem is if the bikes are loaded you can't really open the trunk.
There is a lot of room in the backseat area too, the seats fold up to give you even more room.
One of the best vehicles we have owned.

My dad got one new in 08, it's perfect for hauling bikes.. fits two bikes easy, you can actually fit in three if you turn the middle one around. Plenty of space in the trunk for tools and stuff. Still has it with over 200k miles, he loves it

2 Bikes yes but heavy packers will probably have stuff in the back seat of the cab too.

I would suggest running the tailgate down with an aftermarket cargo extension frame
