Here's a little trivia. See all that gun gas going in the engine intake? We used to have to water wash the engines constantly because of it. Back in the '80's they had us remove and discard the "can" at the end of the barrels and replace it with a "gun gas diverter". A big thick welded steel unit that diverted the gas down the belly of the aircraft. It worked really well except the damn thing had to weigh 25 pounds or more and it wasn't balanced. After a few years of wobbly spinning...the fuselages started cracking just aft of the titanium bathtub. You can spot the ones that were affected...there's a huge plate bolted on the fuselage. Of course, they wanted to reinstall the original cans but...they'd been scrapped years before. Somebody made coin building new ones.

Electric guns are cool.

They're fun to hear just testing with no ammunition.

ZING, ZING, baaaaaaaa.

Not sure how historic it is , but I rode to the F-105 crash sight up in the Piute mountains near Mojave for the first time last week. The plane went down in 1967 , but because of the rugged terrain , most of it is still there. The paint still looks good for almost 60 years old.

That's crazy how much is still there.
Must be pretty remote.

That’s just the tail section. Next time I go I will walk around to see the rest of it. After the ride to get there , my buddy was in no mood to hike around.

I see V-22's pretty regularly in my neck of the woods. Although, I probably see a lot of military craft that most people might not see since I am in the middle of a naval air, airforce, and army joint base.

I hope the V-22's don't go away. They're one of my favorite aircraft.

Pretty damn cool.
So you knew where to go look to find it?

No cheating! Woohoo

Valkyrie was bad ass, but unfortunately obsolete before its first flight due Soviet advances in SAM tech (most notably the SA-2). The downing of Francis Gary Powers’ U-2 sealed the Valkyrie’s fate.

Doesn't get more historic than this, June Bug built by Glenn Curtiss in 1908 just over the hill from me.

Well nobody knew about this cool Aircraft and neither did I as the contract was canceled after two prototype crashes and other issues.

I’m no engineer, but that thing does not look aerodynamically efficient.

It would extremely difficult to engineer an aircraft of that size that was structurally strong enough and still light enough for sustained flight. I'm not surprised by the crashes.

Didn't have to go far. His test flights, factory, grave and museum are only about 10 miles from home. Got a few more I'll put up later.

FYI...The museum has so much more than planes. His early motorcycles are incredible. Maybe I'll start a thread just on those.

Do that!

A Curtiss motorcycle thread might go in the moto forum, since he would have raced moto for sure if it had been a thing in his time.

I had a chance earlier this summer to stop in Dayton and see this plane in person and i was truly
amazing at the size of this thing,... Truly incredible, along with the rest of the museum...

Here is an experimental turbo prop-jet bird that made so much noise that the ground crew puked, some said bad things occurred when it flew over a maternity ward...rumors only, it was retired shortly thereafter.

The martin was meant to fly normal like, the ruskie merican ripp-off was a water hover craft and nothing more. fjb
