Ive been giving serious thought to joining the dual sport world. I saw a new DRZ-400S at the Freestone MX race last year and it sure got me thinking. Seems Im spending less & less time on the RM but I do miss riding. I would ride the thing daily and save a little fuel along the way. I dont like crotch rockets and cruisers arent for me either. Id actually love a sweet '74 Kawi H1500, but the good ones are mega expensive and Im not in the mood to restore a basketcase.

Any of you guys do the dual sport thing?

Those things are dogs. I would go with the CRF450X and have a ball. If I ever get a CR500AF it will get the street legal set up.

I have ridden both that bike and the Supermoto version. Severely underpowered total dogs! You would be very unhappy with that purchase.

I would go with that large KLX or the 450X Honda.

I'm an old guy and I had picked up a little 250 Ninja for my boy as a first street bike. I told him he couldn't ride it until he has been through the safety class and got his license so I rode the shit out of it in the mean time. I had so much fun on that thing I picked up a brand new 650 Ninja and have been riding it to work every day it hasn't rained. All my buds are getting street bikes too and we've been tearing up the back roads. It's nice not having to take the bike through the car wash every time you ride it. Just wipe the bugs off and stick it in the garage and you're done. I would rather have both a street bike and a dirt bike rather than something in between. My dirt bike isn't any fun to ride on the highway and my street bike isn't any fun to ride in the dirt. I would think something in between would be somewhere in between for both street and dirt as far as fun factor.

It's not the "hot rod" ninja but the old man version. You sit upright a little more and it's a twin with a lot of torque. Not nearly as powerful as the 4 cylinder 600 but it's practical and still very fun.
You know thats not too bad, I like the old man version ! The kit you put on only makes sense, that OEM thing is a joke.

Are those things spendy?

DO IT!

looks easy.

To register a motorcycle in the State of Texas, you simply follow the same procedures as you do when registering a car. There is no additional paperwork for registering a motorcycle, though of course on the application you must properly describe the bike's type, model, vehicle identification number (VIN), and engine capacity.

To register your motorcycle, you will need the following:

Proof of ownership

A safety inspection certificate obtained at an official inspection station

Proof of your identity

Proof of insurance

While initial registrations must be made in person at your County Tax Assessor-Collectors office or one of their designated subcontractors, after that you will be able to renew by mail. Depending on what county you live in, you may also be able to renew your motorcycle registration online.

The registration fee for motorcycles is $30.30 per year plus local fees determined by the county you live in ($10 in most areas). If you wish, you may also order special license plates for your motorcycle.

For more information, consult the Texas Department of Transportation's Motor Vehicle Registering and Titling page, and in particular the frequently asked questions.

On the floor it was $5900, $6700 out the door. I didn't try and get a better deal because the salesman was one of my buddies and I figured he could use the extra commission. Smile He'll be running his R6 at Gateway International track days this Sunday. We're all heading down to watch. Hopefully he doesn't lay it down right in front of us like he did last year on the warmup lap. Smile

And I get to ride it for free for 6 months. Then I got insurance through Progressive on both bikes for me and my son and it was less than 200 bucks for the year (no collision).

My buddy just got a 530 KTM, it can be plated here. My KLX can't which pisses me off, it would be perfect for me. I wonder if I can get it plated in AZ since I have property there ? Gotta check it out.

A lot of us "old guys" got our starts with the "Scramblers" of the mid 60 and later DT-1's and the like. These new ones look like they would be fun and fit the same bill. Ride it to the store or go play in the local woods.

The DR 400's with all the smog shit on them are dogs. Mine was an off road bike that was converted.

CRF 450s with Baja Designs kits are the rage in Vegas.

You can make a DRZ 400 work if you know how to tinker. IMO, there are better options and you dont live in CA, so that makes it much easier.

I had a huge boner to buy a DRZ400SM when they came out. One of my friends brought one over literally the day I was going to buy one, I rode it around the block and I couldn't believe what a dog it was. I guess I could see someone who hasn't ridden a modern 450 thinking it was the shit, but the bike tops out around 70 and has no balls.
