Ive been giving serious thought to joining the dual sport world. I saw a new DRZ-400S at the Freestone MX race last year and it sure got me thinking. Seems Im spending less & less time on the RM but I do miss riding. I would ride the thing daily and save a little fuel along the way. I dont like crotch rockets and cruisers arent for me either. Id actually love a sweet '74 Kawi H1500, but the good ones are mega expensive and Im not in the mood to restore a basketcase.
Any of you guys do the dual sport thing?

I would go with that large KLX or the 450X Honda.

It's not the "hot rod" ninja but the old man version. You sit upright a little more and it's a twin with a lot of torque. Not nearly as powerful as the 4 cylinder 600 but it's practical and still very fun.

My boy said that's what all the kids do so I didn't want to get caught riding around on an old man's bike.
Are those things spendy?
looks easy.
To register a motorcycle in the State of Texas, you simply follow the same procedures as you do when registering a car. There is no additional paperwork for registering a motorcycle, though of course on the application you must properly describe the bike's type, model, vehicle identification number (VIN), and engine capacity.
To register your motorcycle, you will need the following:
Proof of ownership
A safety inspection certificate obtained at an official inspection station
Proof of your identity
Proof of insurance
While initial registrations must be made in person at your County Tax Assessor-Collectors office or one of their designated subcontractors, after that you will be able to renew by mail. Depending on what county you live in, you may also be able to renew your motorcycle registration online.
The registration fee for motorcycles is $30.30 per year plus local fees determined by the county you live in ($10 in most areas). If you wish, you may also order special license plates for your motorcycle.
For more information, consult the Texas Department of Transportation's Motor Vehicle Registering and Titling page, and in particular the frequently asked questions.

You can make a DRZ 400 work if you know how to tinker. IMO, there are better options and you dont live in CA, so that makes it much easier.

If you need help plating a bike with ORV on the title let me know.
