Q: Have you ever landed (or boltered) on the deck of a carrier? Ever had to use the Barrier? (Scariest fuckin' thing you'll EVER do!)
The Shop
And This:
They're the future.
53's are huge ass-kickers, too; but, it takes A LOT of money to keep'em in the air.
A good landing, a good orgasm, and a good bowel movement.
A night carrier landing is one of the few opportunities to experience all three at the same time.
All I know is that we took off from Van Nuys and hauled ass east then took a hard left over Colorado that put me to sleep for a few seconds.
The pilot who is a business acquaintance did his best to make me sick with lot's of aerial maneuvers. The Gs are unbelievable.
P
They are mostly just loud.
F-16A from the wing I worked at Nellis:
I also worked the Thunderbirds for a short time doing some mods (adding CSD accumulator).
I worked F-4E and G models in Germany from '83-'86 which are all 2 seaters so the odds of getting a ride in one of those were much higher. I got my ride while on temporary duty in Spain. We didn't have clearance to break the sound barrier but we did take it up to about mach 0.99 and pulled around 7 Gs most of the ride. The pilots who give the rides do whatever they can to make you puke. I didn't puke but for the next 3 days I wish I had. I came "very" close to puking on our touch and go landings at the end of the ride. I would still rate this as probably the most awesome thing I have ever got to do. Thanks taxpayers!
F-4E like the one I got my ride in (and one I used to work on actually):
I worked A-10s at Myrtle Beach (and Saudi) from '86-'92. All of our A-10s were 1 seaters (they only made a couple of 2 seaters). The pilots first flight in an A-10 is solo which I think would be a bit scary.
An A-10 (not from my wing):
Other air machines I have ridden on or flown myself not counting airliners (C5 ~ 5 times):
KC135 and a C141 probably 20 times combined:
C130 probably 20 times:
Blackhawk 3 or 4 times:
Dauphin 1 time:
A buddy is an instructor for light airplanes, gliders and helicopters and he gave me an awesome ride in one of these that I would rate 2nd behind the F-4 ride for fun factor:
I have a few of my old R/C airplane buddies that moved up to ultralights. One of my buds gave me a ride in one about like this one:
That was also fun. We chased deer around fields along the Mississippi river about 25 feet off the deck.
My cousin restored a 1942 Steerman and gave me a ride in it down at Myrtle Beach about 3 years ago. That was a blast too. It is in absolute pristine condition and looks like it just came out of the factory. It looks exactly like this one:
I took flying lessons for a while and have over 50 hours in Cessna 172 and 152s (probably 10 or 15 solo hours):
I may have missed a few. My memory isn't so good. I also have several years of R/C flying which is also a blast (haven't flown R/C in 6 or 8 years though).
Pit Row
He wouldn't happen to be in that picture too would he?
Those things get of the deck NOW!
Those birds ar Cadillacs. The best way back to the beach is on a Viking.
Always listen to the Chiefs...they'll get ya on the good "flight home"...
Remember: The Navy is run by a bunch of folks wearing brown shoes.
