Raced and finished my first half marathon yesterday. A year ago I thought that running 3 miles was a huge accomplishment.

Congrats Alphado. Yeah youre gonna be sore but probably more so tomorrow. Proud of you dude. Like you said about running 3 miles being huge, that knowledge makes running 13.1 kinda daunting. But now you know "how" to do it, "how" to run that far, "how" to "economize" your energy. Very cool.

Are you serious Alph? Didnt know you were training for that. That is HUGE to do a half-mary. Im mega impressed, I cant imagine hammering the pavement for that many miles.

You are a stud ! Congratulations.

Kind of sore today, my nipples hurt more than anything else. The race was put on by the local running club, over 1000 entries.

Awesome dude! The longest I have ever run is like 7 miles or so and that was years ago. Keep it up.

Good job! I ran a half marathon right before breaking my ankle riding my bike in Colorado back in '06. I need to get back into that shape again. I was planning on running the full marathon in Chicago before I did that. I trained my ass off for months to work up to doing the half and I'm not sure I could have finished a full one. What was your time and what age class were you in?

Nice work! I did my first one last month. I signed up thinking I was gonna do all this training and didn't do any. Was just gonna skip it until two days before the race when my buddy tried to puss out. I ran a 2:53 but was on pace for a 2:40 until I got a massive cramp around the 10.5 mile mark so had to walk the majority of the rest.

Yep the nipples will hurt unless you take some preventive action before those long runs. You can use vasoline, but it will stain your shirt, or get some lube from the local running store.

The first marathon I ran I didn't use any lube either, and after I finished I looked down and saw two red circles on my shirt and I thought what the heck is that. It was blood, and yes my nipples were hurting when I jumped in the shower afterwards, didn't even notice it when I was running.

Lesson learned, use some lube next time.

You can use "bodyglide" sold at running stores etc. for chaffing problems.

Ive been in Marathons and seen people standing on the sides of the road with boards with big globs of Vaseline on them. Saw one chick run by, do a 3 finger swipe and then rub it on the insides of her thighs Smile At any rate probably the most important thing is wearing the "CORRECT" clothing. NEVER WEAR COTTON (well unless its cold out and youre just going for a short run) Get a good wicking material type running shirt/singlet etc. You can also bandaid those nips before a race.

Very cool! I was in the same class back in '06 and I just found a picture of me crossing the line at 1:53:08. As I said, I was signed up for the Chicago marathon when I broke my ankle. My ultimate goal was to qualify for use Chicago to qualify for Boston but I don't think I had a realistic shot at making a qualifying time. That half marathon took everything I had.

I put lube on my nips before the start. I was sweating like a stuck hog, probably wore it off.

So did you ever get the ammonia sweats? The first time that happened to me it freaked me out. Taking a shower felt like I was standing in acid rain. I had to do a little internet research to figure out what the heck that was all about.
