Wife's Volvo is in the shop...again. Fucking POS. Anyway, will probably have to buy her a new car in the next year or so. Want your input. Here's what I think it should have:

Classy styling (first on the list because it's what she'll want)

Back seat

AWD (not a necessity, but I'd like to see her have it, especially since she really hasn't driven anything but an AWD in the snow for 4 years now). If not AWD, then it should at least be decent in the snow.

Good power and handling.

Good safety.

GREAT DEPENDABILITY (my want), so more uncertain shit like Audi's, etc., ain't gonna fly, in my book.

Under $45K (preferrable)

No SUV's (my requirement...hate those things)

Any ideas?

I love Subaru's, but the wife hates them, for whatever reason. I'm still going to try to get her to at least go look at 'em and test drive them. Hmm...maybe I can talk her into buying a top of the line STI.

We have a 08 CRV. Bullet proof reliability, has many options like the Lexus RX300 including traction control. Looks cool with 20' wheels. Has more back seat room then even a Range Rover.

It's too bad she's against the suv's, we've had our 02 Lexus rx 300 for 6 years with not one problem. My only complaint is that it's got alittle hitch in the giddyup right off idle. Reminds me of a 74 TM 125. Other than that it's perfect for the wifey for shopping jaunts. Who wants to bend down and get groceries out of the trunk? Or reach in to get those CostCo. boxes out of the back seat? Not I. They also hold their value really well as opposed to a domestic vehicle. Good luck car hunting.

I see about 5 of these every morning I drop my kids off at school. Is this an SUV?

Nice ride, available turbo and lots of bells/whistles for your money.

It's a "crossover" type car but may be too SUV looking, although it handles more like a sports car than a truck:

Interesting, soilsample.

I definitely hate SUV's. It's one reason I bought the Volvo for the wife. Drive a decent handling car AWD, and SUV's are comparable to a truck (maybe except BMW's and Porsche's). I'm the one unwilling to buy the SUV. Hey, if it's my coin paying for her vehicle, I get at least a little bit of a say in what we end up with.

Toyota. Why are you debating on what is in front of you. Toyota's are fool proof. They have even gotten better fools and they still keep going.

Other then that BMW.

You should. My wife drives a BMW 330 and before that a 911SC. She loves driving my STI because of how well it handles and how fast it is even though she is into more "luxury" type cars. She calls it the "race car".

If you don't mind me asking what year and model is your Volvo and what are the issues that you're having? We have an 05 V50 that had major software issues with it when we bought it but our dealer has been nothing but great. Maybe it's because Ford/Volvo/Jag's design group is just 2 miles down the freeway but everytime we had a problem it's been fixed with no signs of the issue again.

I just picked up an '08 sti for 8 grand off msrp. Just got the standard model cause I dont need any of that navigation bs.

It is the greatest deal going right now if you ask me. I couldnt be happier with the car. Nicest thing I've ever purchased for myself. Plenty of room to haul my shit around, I can fit 5 people in it with no problem, lots of head room, comfortable ride, and goes like stink when I want it to.

How can you lose?

my vote would go to a toyota camry or a subbie STI. Both brands make bulletproof stuff, and if you get the STI you can even go have a bit of fun on some dirt roads haha.

I'm still breaking her in. Only 655 miles on it right now. I have a good list of stuff to get first, but the suspension is in the future.

1 - Winter tires. I'm thinking Blizzaks would be good
2 - Rally Armor Mudflaps
3 - Get an AP and go stage 1

After that when I get the coin and the time I'm gonna get the sways and endlinks.

I would get sways long before an AP. And if you do go AP, get the turbo back and go stage 2. You can find a downpipe and catback on NASIOC and craig's for a fraction of new.

I've done all that stuff and feel the best money I spent (in order) was on Hotchkiss sways, Kartboy end links, Bilstein PSS9s, and then camber plates. Then turbo back (bellmouth Invidia Magnaflow 3 in.) and tune. good for 314hp and 345 tq to the wheels. Stock is about 240 to the wheels.

Ours has close to 100k miles on it and we love the damn thing. One of the best cars we've ever owned. And we've owned a lot of japanese and german (and british and korean) cars, just to head that BS off.

STI, and do the mods like dirthead said. Incredible handling. Had a WRX with strut braces and shortthrow shifter. What a car. My son had an Evo also and it was a slotcar too. The new Evo10 is real fun to drive also. You will like them.
