This is one of those stories that's always interested me. A history professor broke it down for us in even further detail once. The Israelis took out the entire Egyptian Air Force in 3 hours. President Nasser kicked a hornet's nest on that one and it all bit him in the ass.

Israel wasn't playing. Probably the most significant aspect of our Middle East foreign policy is making sure Israel doesn't destroy the oil producing countries. Which they would if we pulled out, to defend themselves.

How many people know that during that war, the Israelis attacked a US Navy ship in international waters, killing dozens of crew members and wounding many more? The ship was almost sunk. Surviving crew members maintain that the Israelis knew the ship was American. Some say the motive was to draw the US into the war. Others say it was to prevent the US from listening to Israeli communications.
