Bought a KTM 1290 Super Duke R last weekend so I had to take it to the drag strip to break it in. smile I got 10 runs in and never got beat and after I quit and watched for a while I never saw a better time. Not sure if this is good or not but next time I'll take my ZX10.

Oh, I was 25 in the right lane on that one.

Those times look good to me! I had a very similar experience 6 years ago. First time I ever took a bike to the strip. Kind of guessed on the dial in after a few practice runs.

Here's the first round. Ironically it was against a ZX10 (probably a '10 or '11). It was lowered too. Got him on reaction time. Won the next 3 rounds and brought the trophy home!

Nice! I don't think my reaction times were the greatest. I don't think I had one under .1.

I was leaving on yellow in my practice runs and got 1 red out of 3 runs, so I kind of got a feel for it. I was maybe half throttle so it wasn’t launching too hard.

But, back to the 1290. That’s a fun ride! What was your initial impressions of running it through the 1/4 mile?

So far it's a blast all the way around. I got back on my ZX10 and I felt like I wanted to have nothing to do with it. smile Here's my first run along with a buddy which was also his first time down a drag strip:

That is a lot of motorcycle for the money. Good for,you good for KTM. That things sounds great! Amazing how controllable that much hp can be delivered. Did you lower the rear tire pressure a little? What are the hp numbers on that thing?

My biggest takeaways from the 1/4 was how long it truly is...and it took a while to get that 750 lbs (bike and me) slowed down.

Nice, drag racing might be a little safer for you than the road race thing. If your lights continue to suck, roll in just a little further, but not so much that you deep stage. Have fun.

Nice void.

Get a top fuel harley next and let me ride it once, lol.

I go to Bristol just to watch those guys. Seen several go thru the finish over 240 mph and never set the front down.

I saw a guy on a hyabusa running 9.90s ,not sure if he knew what he was doing and if it would run faster in the right hands.

I remember when the first Kawasaki 500 Triples came out and it was a big deal that they got into the 12's.

Yes, and an even bigger deal that people survived, when they chopped the throttle. devil laughing

That has gotta be a total rush, i went down the strip in a car back when i was like 15, and it was intense. I cant imagine on a bike.

Today I realized I was racing in limp mode the other night. Doh! smile I finally got the bike over 600 miles and it unlocked some more features including a couple thousand more RPM!!!! smile

I know the later generation cummins had limp mode, basically when something goes really bad, the computer locks into a stage where it wont let the engine go past a certain rpm, speed, gear change, etc. but its like 14 mph and stupid. I had no idea bikes had it too.. or if its even related, but im guessing so.

Drag racing(bracket) is all about consistency. You need to, stage, leave and shift at the same rpm every pass. I'm sure for the casual observer drag racing looks easy, and it is physically, but there is soooo much more to it, the more serious you get. I drag raced for a long time and was pretty serious about it.

Just from looking at your time slip, you are giving up a ton time in the 60', for your overall 1/4 mile time, and your reaction time is, ahhh not so good. You need to leave as soon as you see the last yellow light come on. It looks like you are waiting for the green light to come on. The bike overall though, runs really well.

Break in mode, programmed into the ECM, I imagine. Had that POS Volvo truck I bought in 96, only it was the opposite. Motherfucker made boost and power like crazy, by adding fuel, guess it was to help the break in process. At 50,000 miles it quit doing that, so I took it back in. Shop service guy says, "Your salesman didn't tell you about that? It's programmed in, then it goes into an economy mode."
If I wanted economy mode, I would've stuck with my mechanical 425 Cat. I bought this fuckin turd, based on the test drive, and performance. angry

Squid, that would be purely a default mode, to protect the engine, if a major fault code pops up.

Yeah, we were just there having fun. None of us had ever done it before so for us it was all about whoever did the best stoppie at the end of the strip before turning off. smile

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have said "limp" mode but it would have been similar. They restrict certain things until after a certain number of miles for break in. For example, launch control couldn't be enabled and the rev limiter was set lower.

it's all about reaction time and being very consistant....seems like.

On the second run it sounded like you caught another gear after you went through the lights at the end. wink

|

9/25/2017 4:06 PM

Yeah, I shifted into 6th. smile I probably shouldn't have but I didn't want to hit the limiter. Won't have that problem again. smile

We BOTH ran our dial but he got me on the R/T by a tad, THAT was a race.

there are turns....at the beginning from staging lanes and at the end...unless you like kitty litter...

Summit Motorsports Park is my home track, I like the corn fog in the late fall and the wind you get after the grandstands, kinds makes it a challenge even tho its just goin straight
