Fighting in High School?

3/23/2010 6:59am Edited Date/Time 1/26/2012 11:40pm
I watched the news last night and they arrested a couple of kids at the local high school for brawling in the hallway in between classes. How many of us fought in school?

These kids could end up with criminal records for fighting in School. At my school this was a common practice. I think these kinds of policies ruin kids lives before they reach adulthood.

In the modern world that would be considered on school grounds and subject to the same rules. It's ridiculous! Kids are going to fight. It should be dealt with by the school not law enforcement!

i don't know about Alabama, but things are way different here in Virginia than when i was a kid. Disputes etc. were handled by parents in the community, and school officials. Or you settled it yourself after school.
Today the schools are so huge, and run like cities, there really is no sense of community anymore. Plus there is an insane level of liability for school officials, and the levels of violence are higher. Society is more violent.
Like the school in South Florida where the kids set the other kid on fire over a video game, and a guy just put a classmate in a coma by beating her and slamming her head against the concrete. Back in your day how often were kids taking guns to school and blazing away?
The world is changing, and the old "let em settle it out back" thing doesn't fly anymore.
Not that I agree with bringing the cops in. But I understand why school officials would do that.
Say it escalates and next week someone gets killed. School gets blamed, lawsuit etc.

That is all true. Society has created this problem due to our incessant need to litigate. I agree kids today bring guns and knives and it gets stupid. They should take steps to keep guns and knives out of school. Let them settle it like in the old days. I believe that will keep it from escalating. Some of my best friends now are guys i HATED in High School. I have fought many of them. At reunions there is always a discussion about how hard this guy hit or that guy fought. It is a right of passage where I come from. (not Alabama)

I see your point. I simply believe there has to be a better answer.

What are your thoughts on this issue BL?

I have seen petty offenses snowball into a life of dealing with the law. I believe that getting these kids criminal records at such an early age is setting them up for failure. It is at least going to make life a lot tougher for them. We all fought in school imagine if you were punished by today's standards how your life might have turned out.

At my school if you didn't protect yourself you were a target. Some of the more notorious fighters in my area went on to distinguish themselves at San Quentin. We are so proud.

There were fights all the time at my school.

Once, there was a free-for-all that involved at least thirty guys, and quite a few girls.

The ones who got caught using weapons (Bats, pipes, trash cans, etc.) got suspended for a couple days.

Check this shit out:

In middle school, my son mixed some soap into a soda, to play a trick on a friend.

Another kid got ahold of the soda, took a swig, and went ballistic.

The kid's mom was called, the mom called the cops, and my son was charged with assault.

He was taken downtown and held like a criminal, until my wife could pick him up.

He went to juvenile court, and was sentenced to some POS intervention program for youth offenders.

He was grouped with kids who sold drugs, stole shit, and vandalized things.

The program went on for months, and required hours and hours of participation from my wife, myself, and my son.

He's sixteen now, and he has a criminal record.

When he turns eighteen, we're going to spend a bunch more time getting his record cleared.

All over a silly joke.

Go figure!

We always got In School suspension or expelled for a few days. Mom and Dad would rip me a new one when i got home. That was enough to keep me trying to stay out of fights if possible.

I was kicked out of school for 3 days for a fight I got into in the lunch room. I knocked the kid out and 20 minutes later in the principles office he was still crying like a little girl!Woohoo

We rarely had a fight in our school. Very small school though (30 kids in my senior class), don't know if that had anything to do with it.

There was a fight on the school bus nearly daily. I fought with my cousins my brother or whoever the hell else wanted to go!

I would end up getting in fights in PE, which always amused the hell out of the teacher. Depending if you got caught or not, you would be suspended and talked to by the school cop, but I was never booked or detained. But I never brought a weapon and things were never planned; had that of been the case I'd have a copy of a police record to show you.

When the guys were fighting, I was screwing their girlfriends behind the bleachers.

If they had a problem, I made them watch.

I guess I got that stuff out of my system playing football, basketball, baseball and running track. By the time I got out of school, I was too tired to worry about fighting and all I wanted to do was eat and go to bed.

Hell Football is where i learned to fight. Seniors used us freshman for tackling dummies. Threw us in the water when the practice field was soaked. Beat the hell out of us on a daily basis and the coaches encouraged it. They begged us to quit if it was too much for us. No one dared! It made me hit those suckers as hard as I could every chance I got!

In basketball it wasn't as bad but there was still hazing. Baseball the coach was not having any fooling around. If you got busted for horseplay be prepared to run with a bat over your head.
