That scaffolding probably saved his life. That has a lot more give than the concrete building behind it.

Wow, that was just mindboggling. Looked a lot like the crash that took Villenueve. Technical malfunction I assume because he was WFO in a decel zone.

Just noticed the name Sophia, fortunately and by some miracle she lived but did suffer a severed (?) spine.

She's a young German driver named Sophia Floersch and she's 17. The video doesn't show it but she apparently tangled with another driver on the straightaway and that's when she lost control of her car, hit a curb/rail that sent her backwards and thats when she hit another driver that sent her flying in the scaffolding. Before hitting the braking point the speed-trap clocked her going 276.2 km/h or 171.6 mph.

Not sure of the extent of her injuries but she did say she was fine and is having surgery tomorrow for a broken spine. Hopefully there's no SCI involved. The other driver is a Japanese driver named Sho Tsuboi. He was taken to the hospital with pain in his lower back. There was 2 photographers injured. One has a concussions and the other has a lacerated liver. The race marshal was also involved in the accident. He has cuts and suffered a broken jaw.

Very scary, especially since it looks like she went in 'head first'. Hope she makes a full recovery.

Was watching TV earlier and they showed it in slow motion, it's the rear of the car that went into the scaffolding first. You can see it from one the pics I posted higher up.

Her father announced that there was no signs of paralysis and that she retained mobility in all her limbs which is excellent news. She does need surgery but will make a full recovery.

Slow motion vid of the accident.

That is totally horrific. Amazing that all involved came out ok in the grand scheme of things.

Matthes nets for cars are needed.

They do have a runoff area in that corner. Also, that looks Like Armco barrier for scaffolding, like this has happened before???

Been watching racing for many years , and this wreck still has me puzzled. Don't believe the video in which say's she was traveling at 276mph....since an F3 car can't go near that fast. What is mind boggling is the speed in which she was traveling at , in that section of the track. It seems almost impossible? How does one get to enough speed , hit someone else , turned around backward's and still hit the stand at that speed? I can only think of a stuck throttle with a clear track? But even then.....it isn't making much sense to me. Really wish I could see up the track a bit to see what caused all this. I don't think I've seen a formula car go off track that fast in a long time. Especially an F3 car.

I`m curious to see if we get some in-car footage from either of these two cars in the coming days. I just don`t see how she would end up doing a 180 with a wide-open throttle or the same with a brake failure.

Most likely she had to have been trying to defend her position right as she was going into the braking zone and someone clipped her RR tire? Or she was trying to overtake and clipped the other cars RR and did an airborne 180.

That track is insanely fast for a street course, look at these GT3 cars.

276 is km/h, 151 is mph. But I agree that car looked very much out of control. I believe this is the start and first turn so chaotic as usual. Obviously the car went airborn and no control. Guess we will have to wait for telemetry and stuff.

How close was that guy that got knocked over/out to being crushed by the car! It looks like the back of it landed on his legs?

Yeah, it's a weird one. Why was she going so much faster than the other cars in that section? She came from a long way a way, but it's an odd one.

Aren’t those cars all electronic now ? You wonder if something happened and the computer just pinned it.

I understand that , but it wasn't list as KM , it was listed as MPH.

Yeah exactly , very weird. She was going about 2 - 3 x faster than any of the other car's around here. Christ.....she was doing that , in the air , going backwards starting from about 100' further back. This is why I was thinking a stuck throttle with a clear track , because she had to of been going at full speed in that section , with nothing to slow her down until toward's the end of that section. Freakin' crazy.

Everything I read listed it as km/h

There is footage of what happened
She was battling with a driver, he braked earlier than she expected, they hit and her 2 left wheels were broken off, that is why she couldn’t really slow down a lot.

Amazing no one was killed
