Monday Im leaving to go kayak to an island and camp out. 12+ mile paddle. Supposed to be storming the whole trip. Right now the weather channel is saying 18mph winds in the direction Im going, and 13mph winds in the direction Im going when coming back.
If I dont kayak, my only other option is a ferry. After taking the ferry it's a 10 mile hike to the campsite.
Do I trust the weather channel got the winds right? Do I take the easy way out and take the ferry? 18mph head winds and fighting waves, with ~140lbs in kayak and equipment sounds like a rough time. But kayaking next to dolphins and other ocean critters is badass.

48hrs from now? Don't trust the weatherman. If she has big boobs and is a weather girl, yes, trust her.

Nope. Unfortunately, for me, the only dependable way to know what the weather is doing, is by walking outside. If I may ask, what kind of kayak do you have? I have an old
10’ Old Town I use for dropping crab pots and fishing in the Puget Sound.

I swear if I trusted the weather for racing I’d never race.

Days I don’t go nice overcast beautiful track. Days I do go, monsoon. Suppose just ignore it until the moment you’re staring up at the sky in the present.

After living in SE PA most of my life and hearing weatherman tell me a dozen times a winter to stock up on bread, water and milk because of an impending blizzard that never happens, I don't trust them at all. Like said above, wait until the day of to make a decision, if possible.

Morning of decision. Spent summers with my uncle out of Bodega Bay and Ft. Bragg Ca on his small commercial salmon boat, the wind was nothing to mess with. A 24ft boat is fine in 12-15ft rollers till the wind comes up.

In my area the one thing they can forecast consistently is the wind.

Weatherbug is the closest I have found to accurate but as a multiple generation boat Captain and surfer I am the best weather guy we know. lol I used to watch the weather Channel like it was HBO back in the day and some days they would have surfing in the background too. Good luck but there are always other days and better days than yesterday.

I probably ought to mention, I got a 6 hour drive so Im driving down the day before. If I throw the kayak in the bed of the truck, I have to use it. Leaving it unattended in a truck bed for a few days is just asking to get it stolen. So unfortunately I can't make my judgment the morning of.
Should also mention, tides change every 6 hours. So I need to time them right to make the 12 miles without fighting the tides. A strong headwind and my scrawny arms might struggle with that lol

Chance I got 2 kayaks actually. A 10' wilderness systems sit on top that is an absolute blast for hitting the mild rapids and floating around the lake and Chattahoochee.
And then I got an Ascend 13T sit on top that I got for camping trips. Not really an ocean kayak but I've taken the WS out in the ocean and done fine. Got the Ascend wired up with a bilge pump, power outlets, a 50watt solar panel, 10ah in batteries, and lights. She is a big girl. But awesome being able to charge the phone and cameras on the yak.

I follow a kayak tournament guy on YouTube. I have caught thousands of fish out off kayaks over the years. Happens when you are surrounded by water your whole life.

Short answer. Nope, they’re paid liars! Wish I could get paid for being correct half the time.

Whats the difference between mostly sunny and partly cloudy?

So weatherbug is calling for lightening on both ends of the trip and the weather channel has already changed the wind predictions. Im gonna be an adult and just take the ferry.

I always love when the Weatherman says, "35% chance of rain today" and I'm looking out the window at the rain. Looks like a 100% chance to me there Sport!

The most accurate weather report ever

My grandfather had one of those he picked while traveling years ago. My wife and I crack jokes every time we watch the news about weather rocks being more reliable then those weather people.

Guess it depends on where you are and local conditions but if that was the forecast up here, zero chance I would be out in a kayak

Accu weather is the best app, for traveling. Sat In Alabama, it felt like summer, 89 with 87% humidity, all sweaty.

No, I fished everyday as a kid. At some point I just stopped. Just enjoy the water now. My brother still fishes all the time though.

Funny thing is after posting that. A storm came rolling in. Tent was flexing down onto me. Got full of sand. Could hear fabric tearing. Shouldn't have poked fun at the weatherman lol

Fishing or not, any day on the river beats work. I’m anxiously waiting for salmon season to kick off in August.
