Scale from 0 to 100.

0 = No way
100 = the death penalty is the greatest deterrent to murder ever

Here is a test; Ask a person why they don't murder other people (assuming they are not already a murderer) and see what they say. I bet not one person states they only don't murder because it is illegal. They don't murder because the idea abhors them. It is against their integrity. This is the problem with criminals, it can always be traced back to a point where they lost their own integrity. All one has to do to eliminate crime is to rehabilitate integrity. Simple really. Now the problem lies in the fact that people have fixed ideas about things that they chose it as a cause when in fact it may not be. Example: I was talking to a lady one day and after a while she told me that "All people that own guns will eventually become a murderer". Fixed idea. And her brother was a cop! Crazy right? Of course, it makes no sense at all.

So what you're saying is that all people that own guns won't eventually become murderers?!

My point was cause, not the tool. Do you own any guns?

But then again, our jails don't appear to be, either. In fact, about the only thing America's jails cure is heterosexuality. The solution starts in the home, and America isn't ready for that level of responsibility. Heck, let's pay with borrowed money for someone else to ineffectively deal with our problems....it's the American way.

It's not a deterrent because we do it quietly and discreetly in a sanitary environment and then quietly dispose of the body.
Fuck that, bring back public executions. Not kidding. If we're going to do it and say it's a deterrent, let's make it a deterrent by showing people their fate if they kill. "This is what will happen to you if you kill." No one sees that. Executions are not taped or shown on TV, and it should be. I have no problem with public hangings, and then allowing the body to swing for three days as a signal to others of their potential fate if they kill. This is why there was public executions and public punishments, to set an example and display to the public their fate if they turn to a criminal life.

No more than say a sentence of life without parole.

Agree. Add to that the fact that once the death penalty is given, it takes 20 years of appeals and sitting around before the criminal is executed, if at all, and you lose any deterrent effect at all.

I don't have a problem with that, I want to make sure were not killing innocent (or potentially innocent, ie:Troy Davis) people.

I agree that it is not much of a deterrent in it's current form.

The death penalty was carried out all over the world in public for hundreds of years (and in some places still is)

The crowds would gather, and then as the "deterant" was carried out, pickpockets (punishable by death) would rob everything they could.

It isnt and never has been a deterant.

There would always be someone willing to take chances and commit acts that if caught would end in the death penality. But I think that it keeps some "fence sitters" from going over to the dark side. That said, personally Id be more afraid of spending my life in jail or being someones bitch. And that would keep me from committing any crime. Ive read about times in history when people were impaled (sometimes live) on post outside of city gates so everyone coming into the city could see the results of not following the rules. Id think that seeing a 4" diameter log stuffed up your butt with your feet well off the ground might get your attention. As would decapitated heads on poles.

I think without law and fear of prison or the death penality we would have even more murder. When the only law you have is law of the jungle, well only the strong survive.

0.

The problem is, people who commit murder fully expect to get away with it.

Kind of makes the punishment a moot point.

That said, I believe the punishment should fit the crime when they are caught and convicted.

But I have no problem with the State nuking murders & child molesting monsters.
