Jaw dropping. I'm usually a leave it alone, black and white guy, but that's was primarily because the colorized versions I've seen in the past did more to detract from the photo than add to it. Amazing.

Is there a source you can share? If not, thanks for sharing what you did. Wow.

They just popped up into my FB feed. There are some true artists out there colorizing these old photos. Kodachrome was available in WW2 but they didn’t come out that great.

These were all black and white and then colorized. They really are quite amazing.

I should note there are some WW1 photos in there as well.

Incredible pics and what an absolutely insane event WW2 was.

I would have been the dude hiding under the Jeep!

Pictures are from D-Day.

Wow. These are incredible. I read WWII history religiously and have always been fascinated by it.

My grandfather, John MacGillivray (whom my son is named after) was a purple-heart decorated Marine who fought in the Pacific theater as a radioman. He fought in Tarawa, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He then went on to fight in the Korean War. He served the USMC and our country from 1941-1969. Hell of a man.

WW2 and WW1 colourised pictures pages on Facebook have hundreds of them, all with a bit of backstory as well. Well worth a follow.

That last picture was on the ww2 colourised page on fb, the young lad looking at the camera was a teenager and was killed not long after.

There are some really good pages on instagram to follow for colorized pictures of history. I follow like 6 of them already. Some are focused on eras, like WW1, WW2, American civil war etc. It is amazing how much alive and real the event look with colour.
BTW. the exploding ship in the first post I think is HMS Barham. There is a video on YT of it exploding too when the ammunition caught fire. Great post and topic btw!

Wow man , these pics are all amazing. A lot of them seem to be taken from both sides as well. And the timing on some of those shots are incredible. Both WW1 and WW2 were really complex as far as all the different fronts / battles almost every country fought. And the conditions a lot of them soldiers had to live in were just brutal. Thanks TX and Mav for putting these up. Incredible thread.

We tend to think of the lives of people from bygone eras as less important, since they have all passed now anyway. We look at them through the filter of time and think, "well, it was their job and their destiny to die." We forget how very real and very important their lives really were. These pictures do a lot to bring that home. Man, they were all just kids. Sad

Hey guy's , I had to do some searching as I didn't have it book marked or subbed , but here is an incredible channel I ran across quite a few months back on YT. >>> https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfCKvREB11-fxyotS1ONgww/videos

Mark Felton is who it is , in case the link doesn't work.
yeah mate, been watching his stuff for years. He also provides good info on what happened through historical records.
WW1 and WW2 have been well documented. I fell-like the conflicts prior shaped us even more, in as sense.
Big history nerd (why I went to Syria and Iran) and loving these. It shows the humanity in people even though they may not be be on your side. We can learn a lot from this!

Man , I'll tell you what Sunhouse , I have watched probably 20 of his videos just today. I went on a roll and couldn't stop watching. I almost feel like I went to school today. That Mr Felton is the single most educated historian I've ever come across. His commentary on some of these videos is so detailed , lined with even the smallest facts , it's incredible. So glad I went and found his channel.

Yeah, I agree. And he is very pragmatic, he doesn´t judge or fit the anti communist or anti nazi agenda. If something was done well, or worked, he will tell it. Those are really important qualities when retelling or conveying history

It wasn't me. It does appear that one of Sunhouse's post was removed. If you quoted his post, it was automatically deleted when Sunhouse's post was removed.

Yeah I just saw that Sunhouse post was gone. Maybe he accidentally deleted it?

Had some good nuggets of info in it.

Yeah, someone removed it along with another post. Wasn’t trying to be political, just using a current time example for my argument on Germans in WW2. I thought history was ok to discuss here...? I felt like we had an interesting exchange and take on history and sources of good info. Oh well...

I guess I missed it. Was this before or after our replies back and forth?

I was telling my wife about your post and the battles on the Eastern front and how so few Americans know about them.

We both love history and you are absolutely right how little many know/understand those other important battles.

Have you ever read forgotten soldier by Guy Sajer?

He was a member of the Panzergrenadier Division Großdeutschland, an elite unit in the German army and he spent his whole war on the Eastern front.

Its pretty much the Storm of Steel of WW2, savage stuff.

It's the best book I've ever read followed closely by Saburo Sakai's "Samurai."
