I`m gonna put my tinfoil hat on and say it`s a weapons cargo disguised as fireworks that got taken out by someone. They say it was a ship with fireworks cargo.

I`m no expert but that looks atomic.

I thought so at first as well, but upon closer examination it appears the pressure of the explosion brought the moisture out of the air for a moment. Hell of a blast!

Major General Abbas Ibrahim, of Lebanon's General Security Directorate, said the massive blast that shook Beirut's port area on Tuesday was caused by confiscated “high explosive materials.”

It would be "naive to describe such an explosion as due to fireworks," Ibrahim told Lebanese TV.

Very sad all around, especially for a region where there has been so much turmoil

Sadly, many firefighters who were fighting the initial fire were killed after the second explosion.

Not sure it was bigger than the fireworks explosion in China a few years back but it probably gave it a run for its money. You have to wait for the big one, it's like the 3rd explosion:

It is being reported now that ammonium nitrate was stored in the area where the initial fire was. That would explain the scale of the blast assuming enough quantity.

If that were atomic, anyone filming that would be blind and unable to post.

Fwiw, found this on the internet
Edit: this story is very old so probably not reliable.

I'm decently versed in demolition per my current employment. To me looks similar to the HE stuff we use out in the field, clean burn and extremely fast detonation. The lower grade fuels you'd see in fireworks would net fire and smoke like what we saw in China a few years ago, large batches of TNT and a few other things will do the same. Usually the faster the deflagration the cleaner it will be.

What ever it was it was BIG to create the visible shock-wave like that. Biggest thing i have popped was right around 1k N.E.W it was healthy but looked nothing like that.

Prime Minister of Lebanon says explosion fueled by an estimated 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate. Compare that to the '95 Oklahoma Federal building of just over 2 tons. Damn.
