In my eyes that's a pretty reasonably punishment for his actions.

Better than the soldier who suffered brain damage (unable to speak and in a wheel chair) while out searching for him..

Best option in my mind is to require him to assist in rehabilitation for returning veterans (be it paperwork, janitorial services, helping them get resettled, etc). A friend of mine from college was ambushed and killed while searching for that deserting piece of shit, so my thoughts are probably on the extreme end of the spectrum. I'm focused on the family left behind without a father, husband and son, and would have no problem if Bergdhal met a similar fate.

I think the verdict is a poor decision. I understand if he wanted out. But that's not how you go about it. There were consequences to his choice.

That's honestly a good idea, jail isn't going to fix anything but making him work in the VA might. Say 10 hours a week for the next 40 years. About as much of a win as you can get from this.

I wouldn’t want him anywhere near the VA. He needs to be doing community service at a prison. He needs to be in Leavenworth. You can’t make someone want to help soldiers in the VA especially when he himself left his post. He took the oathe. I took it. Many before him have taken it and died before him. I expect to die if I abandon it. He disrupted many families lives that wouldn’t of been destroyed if he didn’t desert. I have no sympathy for him. Have to agree with firing squad as said earlier.

There is an interesting podcast series by "Serial Podcast" with Sarah Koenig and she interviews him and asks him about the story from his point of view and interviews people who served with him.

If this topic interests you I would highly recommend you listen. It gave so many different perspectives from people who were directly effected by his decision to walk off.

I'm not as extreme as you guys who are calling for the firing squad (then again, I never served in the military,) but I think his release should not have been bargained for. Let him linger in a Taliban jail from now on.
