A good buddy of mine has one , as far as I know he has never had any problems. If you have any specific questions ,I could text him and find out.

No specific questions yet, but I will keep that in mind if I think of any. Thanks!

You have a dealer close by or a good import car specialist that you trust? They seem to have few issues, but when they do you will want someone familiar with them wrenching on it.

I mostly do all the work on my veichles myself at my family's used dealership. Typically if I get in over my head, I have the lead mechanic take care of it. I am more or less curious if owners tend to have to have them in the shop frequently or if they are pretty dependable.

I've got an 04 Golf TDI...I LOVE the car. I don't know enough about them to tell you the difference between the 04 and 09's, though (sorry I'm no help there).

My only complaint is that I wish it had a 6th gear. At 65 MPH, on the highway it'll get 50-55 MPG...at 85 MPH it drops down to 40-45 MPG.

With 3 dirt bikes on a three place rail trailer and three dudes and three gear bags...it still gets 25-30 MPG on the highway cruising at 80 MPH...as long as there are no hills, it doesn't like hills with that extra weight. lol.

I get weird looks from people when I've got three bikes on the trailer...but i'm used to it now. Smile

40-45 mpg at 85mph? Damn, I don't know how you can afford to drive that thing on the interstate. At that rate, it must cost what, couple hundred bucks to drive from Los Angeles to New York in that thing? Sheesh. Wink

Except for the very smallest cars (Up and Polo) the majority of all types of VWs sold in Europe have TDI engines of various sizes.

I had a Passat Estate with a 2 litre TDI in it. Plenty powerful enough and ridiculously good MPG. Great car but a bit old so I traded it for an Audi A6 estate with the same engine - so nice!

Turbo's can go after 100,000 miles so keep on top of oil changes and only use the best oils. Otherwise TOP cars.

Avoid the DSG of those years. Look for clutch peddle vibrations on manuals, the double mass flywheel likes to break and that's a 700-1000€ job. If you go look for one, buy a bluetooth ODB plug and install the torque app on your phone. That way you can read the fault codes of the engine.

I bought my '08 for 3500€ (118k km on it :D ) because the prev owner was told by the garage the flywheel was fucked. Looking at the signs i knew it was turbo pressure loss so the tubing was the issue. Threw on a new timing belt and tubing and 300€ later i have a reliable but cheap car. Wink they are extremely popular here so parts are easy to find to.

My mother drives a 12y old seat leon with a TDI engine (which i bought new) 0 issues accept for normal wear items. My friend had a VW Bora that had 300k km on it. Still sold for 5000€, lol. Another has a golf4 with 320k km (140hp version) also 0 engine troubles and still drives it daily.

Thanks for the advice! I had no idea about the ODB plug. I had read up on the DSG trans and I am going to steer away from that(looks like the wife finally needs to learn to drive manual). The main reason I was leaning towards the 09-10 vs the 06 and earlier is to get the 2.0 instead of the 1.9 due to the difference in performance. It just seems the owners of the 1.9L swear by the durability.

2.0 had some troubles the first years. They had trouble with the build in oil pump. The driveshaft of the pump could shit the bed, so the engine ran dry... :s

1.9 TDI platform is on the market since '93, 2.0 since '03 if i'm not mistaken. The reputation of the 1.9 is allot more solid because it's older (and pre TDI they had the famous turbo diesels that where indestructible). The later 2.0 ( from '08 i think) is also more refined due to common-rail vs regular injection. More silent engine, smoother and better power.

The manual is not much of a step down of the DSG, imo they are the most smooth and direct shifting manual cars on the market here. Most brands get a shitload of play on the shifter that makes it 'harder', but most of all, annoying to find the proper gear. The VAG's stay solid in that regard. Even after allot of miles and years of abuse. The dual mass flywheel make gear transitions very smooth as well.

I have one,a GT TDI,it has the DSG box which I must say is incredible, the thing is so quick which flawless, fast gearchanges.

It's done 170K and had 1 turbo, always been looked after though and driven sensibly,it was Fathern in-laws and now the Mrs

Funnily enough my sister in-law bought the manual, done 110K and side by side we all prefer the auto it's light years ahead as driving goes,I guess it's all luck of the draw and how previous owners have looked after them, they can go forever as Overthebars says

I have an '09 VW Scirocco 2.0 TDI GT (manual). I love it, it's such a great car to drive, especially having lowered it a fraction. When you put your foot down there is a slight delay before the turbo kicks in, but it picks up nicely and it's perfect for driving in the UK.

Before that I had a pretty bog standard 1.9 Audi A3 TDI, but the engine was indestrucable and the MPG was brilliant. The MPG is still pretty decent on the Scirocco, especially on the motorway where you can just cruise in 6th. It's not quite so good when youre having a bit of fun and booting it out of corners etc though Smile

My fiancee's family has a bunch of VW TDIs, I forget what year the new diesel emissions went into effect (Mid 2000s I think) but their older ones do 10ish mpg better than the post emissions standard ones.

On a separate note, we picked up our new 2016 WRX 2 weeks ago, and I absolutely love it. It is incredible to drive and did 33mpg doing 75mph on the highway yesterday (Albeit on 91oct ethanol free gas).

That's great on the WRX. I loved mine until I started having multiple issues with the local Subaru service department, and then realized I have a lot more interest in ktm than my subie.

My father picked up an 04 golf with the 1.9 on our dealership for dirt cheap. I may go up and drive it and see how it is. Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

I've got an 04 Gold with the 1.9. I really like it. (My post above has more of my opinion on it).

Yea it's starting to sound quite appealing. It's a 5speed with around 100k on it. He just did the timing belt on it and a few other ins and out. I believe he only has around 3k invested so far, so in my opinion that's a good deal.
