I am buying a new laptop and my computer geek advises me to not get Vista. He says I should continue with XP, and overleap Vista altogether. The guy at HP is pushing Vista.

I suppose some of you will argue either way and that is what I want to hear. What do YOU recommend?

thx,

I've had a HP laptop with Vista for about 6 months. No problems, no complaints.

There's really nothing particularly wrong with Vista, despite all the bad press.

If you're buying a new laptop that was made for Vista, and don't plan to run some archaic or industry-specific software or device which cannot work in Vista, you'll like it just fine.

We have a media center that acts as our DVR at home, and it works much better under Vista than it did under XP's Media center.

We have one computer here at work that is on Vista, and it works fine. The other two are on XP because we bought them when we started the business and Vista compatible software wasn't out yet. One I still cannot switch to Vista because the RIP software would cost me too much money to upgrade for no functional difference; besides, I don't really feel any need to upgrade an old (3 years old) computer.

My parents have two computers and a laptop, all with Vista, and they like it too.

It's too long to wait for Windows 7 if you actually need the laptop right now.

Yes, 15.4. It's a dv6000. Picked it up for $400 new and it was way too good a deal to pass up. I only use it for the web and movies though. As long as I keep my wife and kids away from it, it will last long enough.

Ger, Vista is crap

Get a Mac

Most software can be obtained for Mac, or if necessary, like I did, you get something called "VMWare Fusion" and it allows you to run windows on Mac....and it STILL boots much much faster...then you can run any essential windows programs on your Mac, you can even drag & drop between Mac and windows.

It's what I did so my business Quickbooks would run on my Mac, which I moved into back in June

Vista blows.

I was nervous about changing, because it was new, but super happy I did.

Otherwise, only buy an XP.

Avoid Vista

Thx Dave.

You could run Windows on the Mac (at the same time as MacOS) and run your old apps under it. I recently bought 2 HP laptops to replace my kids old HP laptops and they came with Vista. I shrunk the Vista partition down and installed Fedora (Linux) and they can boot up either. If they need Vista they can boot Vista but I don't think Vista has ever been booted on either of them.

I've had my dell 1501 laptop for just over a year now, and it came with Vista, and you know I don't really mind it.

But honestly, I mostly use mine for email, and talking shit on mx forums.

You could dual boot Windows and MacOS on a Mac in a similar way that I dual boot Linux and Windows on my kids' laptops. If you want to get exotic you could run VMware on the Mac and run Windows and MacOS at the same time like I mentioned. Here's a little article on how to set up the dual boot on the Mac:

Mac's are for low end users. PC's are the "R" model of computers.

If you are a C class computer user than go ahead and pay twice as much for a computer that has no balls.

Or buy a PC with balls and install MacOS. I wouldn't run MacOS on it but I sure as hell wouldn't run Windows on it either. Smile

That's what I have and it works great.
Use it to boot windows to run my Quickbooks (supposedly Mac Quickbooks isn't as good)

curious, why a laptop? At 17" monitor size it's too big to lug around much.

I guess it's handy, but most folks end up with a docking station, keyboard and mouse and then never move it.

Great, just paid an extra $500 for a portable computer that sits still.

Vista is a pile of restrictive garbage. Stay with XP. If you could, go Mac instead, though.

I have had no problems with Vista on a Dell Desktop for almost a year now.

What I don't like is the new version of Microsoft Office.
Word 2007 and Excel 2007 are the problems.

Word 2007 can open and read older versions like Word 2003. Word 2007 documents are saved with a .docs extension. This is not recognized by older versions of Word. You have to do a "Save as Word 97-2003" for it to be given a .doc extension which is readable by older versions.

Excel 2007 has the same issues. Excel 2007 can read older versions but Excel 2007 files are saved with a .xlsx extension. This is not readable by older versions. You have to do a "Save as Excel 97 - 2003 Workbook".

Don't know about PowerPoint 2007. Probably the same thing.

How much RAM do you have on yours? Was it the default amount or did you tell them to add more because you were going to be running VMware? Double the OSs means double the RAM requirements (for Ger's info).
