So my in-laws got new kitchen cabinets. I helped remove all the old stuff, the cabinets are installed and I’m trying to get their kitchen useable. They had a 2-bowl sink and went to a sink bowl. I have the garbage disposal hooked up and the sink is useable but I’m not sure how to do the dishwasher and vent. I think I can just run the dishwasher drain into the pvc that was the 2nd sink bowl, using a “high loop” arrangement. Just wondering how I do the vent. My sink at home is single bowl and I have a separate vent under the sink but I don’t think there old construction has this vent to the outside. I told them they might just have to hire a plumber for this....

Pretty sure the vent goes on the sink now, like this:

I’m not a plumber, but when we got new counter tops they asked if we needed a hole drilled in them for the dishwasher vent.

You’ll have to drill a single 1 3/8” hole on the sink if it doesn’t have one for the air gap. The air gap has a nut that you’ll have to tighten to hold it in place. It serves as a vent. Run the dishwasher hose to one side then, other side to the garbage disposal. New garbage disposals have a knock out plug that you need to remove before attaching the hose.
You’ll need a new trap kit as well. The diagram above is correct. Yeah, I’m a plumber.

When I was an apprentice and installed my first disposal I forgot to knock it out. I didn’t even know there was that option. I remember the look on my journeyman’s face when I asked why the fuck isn’t the dishwasher draining.

Seems I have some little bitch following me around different threads now. Oh well, guess I hurt her feelings.

Back on topic. Yak, fell free to pm me and I’ll walk you through it over the phone. Most plumbers will charge $175 an hour plus, to install that. It’s a 20 minute job and you’ll get hammered for a minimum of two hours while they drive to your house and take their sweet ass time.

Both methods shown in second post are legal in California, it generally comes down to which model dishwasher you have and what the manufacturer specs are. Quite often the loop is fine but check your model.

Washington by code requires a physical separation via air gap. In California, it’s also legal to run your water lines on the outside of the house lol.

Bring a change of clothes. I had to pull a sump pump and pressure wash it to find the crack on it this day. Only thing missing is the face shield I was wearing. For the record, that’s glue and mud lol .
