Ok, heres the deal.
Somehow I got bright into a mess of a security system.
Ativa router with wireless capability, and a Q-See DVR.
It's hooked to 3 camera's and you basic CCTV style reviewing.
Whats the easiest way to be able to use a laptop and connect to the router and review video on the DVR?
If i hook in using a CAT 5 connection i came watch live streaming video, but I can't seem to connect wirelessly. I see the signal being broadcast, but I can't get into PC Viewer to review it wireless. I keep getting a unknown error code.
The equipment is in a loft, and it's PITA to get to to review video.
There has been some vandalism in the area and it's more of a CYA type of system just in case some kids spray paint or stuff like that.
The WEP passphrase seems to be too long for the area it's supposed to go.
Is there a way to master reset, rename the SSID and generate a new WEP code?
I would prefer to go to a WPA or WPA2 if I have to redo things.
The program being used on the laptop is called PC Viewer if that helps.
If im missing any info, I'll try and get it for you.
Nothing like taking over someone elses mess..
Thanks.
It's something like this if this helps..

Theres no internet connection or modem connecting. Does there need to be in order for the router to still broadcast a wireless single to the laptop?
The router broadcasts a signal, full strength. I can connect to that signal, but I can't view the DVR wireless. Obviously cables connect the DVR to the router.
I'm not sure if it's the DVR, or if it's the PC Viewer program.
Ativa's IP site is 192.168.2.1 but I try to go to that and use their Admin console but the site continues to time out., So I can't get into that site.
Does the router have to be configured to link with the DVR maybe?
That IP i listed is for the main admin page for Ativa, but it times out.
how did you get into the consloe to configure the router in the 1st place?
the ativa "site" is yer router box....
The Shop
One i get it sorted out I'll got with a WPA or MAC security, but I havent gotten there yet.
I'm dumb at this stuff, I'm sort of learning as i go..
i wasn't the one who installed the system it was just kinda dropped in my lap.
First see what you laptop IP address is and if it is not 192.168.2.# and the gateway is not 192.168.2.1 then your router is not giving out DHCP information. configure your laptop to a static IP address 192.168.2.111 (something that probably is not being used) and set the gateway to 192.168.2.1 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and then start your laptop. That will "place" yo on the routers network. Make sure that there is not an "optional" port that you or any other device is plugged into, because many routers/firewall have a "trusted" and "optional" networks and one will not talk to the other. You need to access the UI of the router to make sure it is configured to give out DCHP and that any wireless signal is on the main network config. Once that is done then setting up the other devices should be farily straight forward.
Most of the time there is an issue with "not being able to connect" it is a simple IP issue at the heart.
