How long have you been in Eugene?

My wife is from Springfield, and went to Thurston High...and Kip Kinkel shot his parents and then went to school and killed two others and wounded like 20 more...this would have been in 97 I think.

(Speaking of close to home, for you.)

My mom went to Thurston, Kip's dad was her Spanish teacher. I think she graduated in '82 or '83.

I was 7 when that happened, I was just a little too young to fully comprehend that one.. still tragic. I coached girls basketball there one winter, and there's a lot of chain link gates and such. Its eerie, at times..

This is the 19th school shooting in the US so far this year, and we are only three quarters of the way through.
We live in a very fucked up, violent and disturbed society.

19th. I heard 45th. These news outlets are spouting off terrible information.

You know, I think it's time the colleges hire an ex military or some type of trained armed guard to sit in a bomb proof and air conditioned box in each lecture hall/library/common hall. Then you'd think they could quickly intervene and save some lives.

I know....not feasible. But if I pay a $400 athletic fee per semester. I'd be more than happy to pay a $400 civil protection fee.

Actually I was wrong, it's firearm discharges. Here is the wonderful list:

Just passed through Roseburg a couple of weeks ago, was going to stop and eat at one of their breweries. Ended up stopping in Corvallis, and took a little drive around Oregon State University to show my daughters what a big college looks like.

Sucks we have to live in a world where evil can affect us anywhere.

It's my daughter's first year at OSU and in her first week there was a freshman raped just outside her dorm. Now this. It just tears me up to see all this promise destroyed by mad men. It needs to stop, WTF!!!

Our society is ill. And as I watch the moral fabric of our society crumble and weaken...these things become more and more common.

What morals?

-Strong familys with a mother and a father in the home (more than anything)
-Personal Responsibility
-Hard work
-Greed
-Selfishness
-Honesty

As our society continues to put less and less of a priority on those things, we will continue to see things like this happen more and more.

I also wonder if the chronic, widespread abuse of prescription drugs isn't part of the problem. But yeah, I agree with your list.

I think that kind of plays into the "hard work" aspect...our society just wants to take the easy way out (they don't want to have to work for anything...same with debt, rather than save up for something we really want, we just take the instant gratification and put it on the credit card), and rather than deal with their problems, they'd rather just take a pill (and the side affects that go along with it).

But its definitely an issue.

These shooters are not very efficient. They'd save an awful lot of bullets by turning the gun on themselves, first.

Not to sure I agree with the Greed and Selfishness part, they aren't particularly conducive to a healthy society, possibly in moderation and not at the expense of community and others. Without meaning to go all hippy and spiritual, in a society of such speedy and easy connection between people we are drifting further apart.
