2020 Ford Crew Cab w/ STD or Longbed? 6.7 Diesel VS. 7.3 Gas?

Currently driving a 2012 F-250 Super Duty 6.7 diesel, extended cab, long bed and it's been nothing but trouble. Most recently the fuel pump imploded on itself and sent metal particles into the injectors! Total nightmare.

Leaning towards the new 2020 F-250 Super Duty 7.3 gasser with the 10 speed trans. When you open the hood, you can actually see the valve covers, spark plugs and headers! I'll be giving up some torque, but I should be okay towing my 19' toy hauler?

Anyhow, I definitely need a crew cab, but can't decide between a standard bed or a long bed?

For the 2-3 times a month that it will be used to haul bikes, it would be nice to have a long bed.

But will I regret the long bed for the rest of the time that I'm not hauling bikes to the track?

I'd appreciate feedback from those who have a crew cab, long bed as their daily driver in the city.

As well as anyone out there who has switched from a Ford diesel, to the new 7.3 gasser?

Get the long bed. It's completely worth it for the convenience when hauling bikes.

I would get the gas version as well and save on both the upfront cost of the diesel motor, and price per gallon of diesel. These new diesel trucks do not get mileage like the old ones until you let them breathe and remove all the emissions crap, which is another expenditure.

It will haul your 19' toyhauler with no issues at all. I went from a diesel to a gasser and do not regret it one bit. Now, if I was towing +12k all the time, I would have got the diesel, but for the 2-3 times I tow a month, with our 8k lbs trailer, the gasser serves it's purpose well.

Oh, and regular maintenance is cheaper too.

New diesel trucks are a waste of money. They choke em out so much it defeats the purpose. Seems like shits always goin wrong and they’re expensive as hell to fix.

I would go gas mainly for the initial purchase cost.

Me personally don’t care for long beds because of where I live. Parking at the coast is just about impossible with a long bed crew cab. Back when I was hauling bikes around I used a tailgate extender and had no problems.

I use the standard bed for construction work and just load up the plywood/drywall and let it hang over the back. For long materials I have a 16’ utility trailer.

I have a Crew Cab Long Bed and parking it is a little bit of a pain in some lots, but not significantly more than a standard bed.

I bought a '19 6.2 crewcab short bed. I have a 35' toy hauler and the truck doesn't have any issues at all towing. I don't use a WD hitch and never even "feel" it other than hauling up hills. Great truck, never needed a diesel.

The fuel pumps are an issue with that generation and I think the Rams used the same pump. Ford pulled it together pretty good with the diesel reliability starting in 17 I think. Keep in mind that the top of the tailgate on a 4x4 is right at 5' so the bed height is probably around 40". They look really high and for an old fart like me it would be a bitch to load a bike. I am probably going for a standard bed gasser a little later this year. The gasser should pull your trailer around like it isn't even there.

My buddy bought one. I can’t believe how fucking high they are, what a pain in the ass using the bed must be. I don’t get it. It’s not for payload, because the F-450s/550s/600s don’t sit that high.

Have you driven one of the 7.3 gas trucks? It's a great motor but makes about half the torque of the diesel and it is noticeable if you drive them back to back, even to your 2012. But it sounds killer, and if you don't tow anything super heavy I'd personally get the gas motor. a 19' toy hauler can't be much more than 6000 lbs or so, which is fine for the gas truck.

The smaller bed still fits 2 fullsize dirtbikes no problem, at most the tailgate has to be cracked open a touch. I know a few people that use these:

I always had diesel trucks (I’ve had 6 of them). My current truck is a 2018 f250 with the 6.2. I hate it so much. The first time I towed with it (my ranger on a car trailer, maybe 4K #) I knew I made a huge mistake. Coming from a diesel you will probably be miserable like me. If you’ve only had gas trucks, it’s great. I got to drive a new 7.3 for about 150 miles, and it felt better, but it’s not a diesel replacement.

For what it's worth my new Laramie with the 5.7 and 3.92's has 30'ish less horsepower and 70'ish less ft/lbs of torque and the two times I've dragged something behind it it was amazing. It's rated for 12k but not sure I'd do that on anything but a flat drive. It towed 8k and 10k great. Barely noticed the 8k, but you could feel the 10k definitely. Not in a bad way but you knew it was back there.

It does not have the airbag system though, so that made a bit of a difference with the 10k boat.

Should see it in 10 weeks.

And it looks like Whipple Superchargers will have a kit for them soon! Do I dare?

The F-600s don’t even have the Powerstroke as an option, only available with the 7.3L.

That 3L Whipple would make for a very fun ride. Admittedly, it's going to run 10K by the time all is said and done, but 750lb ft of torque....

Well dudes, my special ordered longbed 7.3L XLT FX4 arrived yesterday at the dealer and I picked it up today! So far I’m plenty satisfied! The wheels aren’t my favorite, but it was my only option with the package I ordered. We’ll see how this thing tows our toy hauler soon. Will report back with my thoughts!

Meanwhile, might have to do some window tint, wheel upgrade and a leveling kit? Electric door steps?

First is a longer loading ramp!

I think Ford wants you to put 1,000 miles before you tow. Most people think that is to break in the rear end. Some speculate it is for the ecu to learn your driving habits for the 10 speed trans. There is lots of info over on Fordtrucks.com in the late model Super Duty forum.
