McLaren have announced they will not participate in this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix after one of their team members tested positive for the Coronavirus.
McLaren Racing has confirmed this evening in Melbourne that it has withdrawn from the 2020 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, following the positive test of a team member for the coronavirus,” it said in a statement.
The team had announced yesterday that one of its staff was being tested for the virus.
“The team member was tested and self-isolated as soon as they started to show symptoms and will now be treated by local healthcare authorities,” the statement continued.
“The team has prepared for this eventuality and has ongoing support in place for its employee who will now enter a period of quarantine. The team is cooperating with the relevant local authorities to assist their investigations and analysis.
“Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, and Andreas Seidl, team principal of McLaren F1, informed Formula 1 and the FIA of the decision this evening. The decision has been taken based on a duty of care not only to McLaren F1 employees and partners, but also to the team’s competitors, Formula 1 fans and wider F1 stakeholders.”
McLaren has not indicated what part of the team’s operation the member of staff was involved in. Both its drivers Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz Jne were present at the track today.
EDIT: Sky Sports is reporting that they plan to move forward and race. Still waiting for official confirmation.
As far as the race goes, media outlets continue to release conflicting reports. I tend to believe the reports that the team principals are willing to go forward with the race, but of course what the drivers want is a completely different story. It sounds like Hamilton is hoping for a cancellation. As for the rest of it, it sounds like the FIA has already made their decision but was set to have a meeting with the Australian government before making an announcement. I mean we're only a few hours away from free practice at this point...what a shit show.
I also saw some reports that one mechanic was told he needed to head to the track to help tear down their team area, while another mechanic was told to report to the track as the race is going forward. LOL.
It has been an absolute farce the way this has been handled / communicated
Pit Row
Bummer
Suck suck suck as far as the eye can see.
Go ride your dirt scooters everyone.
I still wonder how all of this ends? Its like a freakin movie! Even up here Costco is out of TP, Paper towels and water, and walgreens was out of rubber gloves. We are not in that big of a city, so to be out of stuff is pretty alarming.
I think in total there's just under 250 confirmed cases up here. That's about 100 more than two days ago.
Concerning F1, depending on how all of this plays out, we might just skip ahead to 2021.
I read an article not long ago that said Red Bull/Horner are planning on protesting Mercedes in regards to the new DAS they have even though the FIA already said it's legal for this year. I don't get the logic behind that move.
Talks about 2 day weekend GP's to allow triple headers.

Man thats gonna be rough on the teams.
WOW no Monaco, that is a kick in the nuts. The Principality is so iconic. So much $$ on the line in F1, makes SX look like the local Flea Market.
On another note, browsing Youtube last night i ran across Lewis on Jimmy Kimmel, it was actually a pretty good interview, shoulda bookmarked it and posted, but it was at like 4am and my mind was oatmeal LOL
...i am so fucking bored out of my skull. Being a sports fanatic isnt easy in these times.
