First off I hadrly know anything about dirt bikes. So bare with me on my bike lingo. I bought an 08 kx 450 the other day from Craigslist. It cranked right up after a few tries when I got there. Took it home and cranked on first try. The next day I could not even get the kick lever to go down. I held in the cold start lever ( whatever its called, The one above the clutch) and it would take about 10 tries for it to even budge. When I'd funnaly get it down I'd roll it back up and try to kick it and still wouldn't budge. Have to start all over again. I tried to push start down a hill a few times but still won't start. It tried once, but I don't the the hill is steep enough. I called my local shops and they just said combustion is built up or something and tel just let it sit for a few hours. But I've tried it for 2 days now and nothing. Also. After I brought it home. I would just lean it against the fence instead of putting it on the stand. Could this have anything to do with it! Please help :/
If that lever is a compression release here's a video to help you figure out the cycle:

Is there a fuel on/off from the fuel tank?
Is there gas in the tank?

Does the previous owner live far away? Maybe he can help you out?
Possible to load a video showing your problem?

There's a thread on what might be your issue. Since you've admitted your a newbie on the bike I hope your skills with a wrench are decent. If so you should be able to navigate through the process.
Good luck.
... and I wouldn't go to the local shops for anything if that's the advice they offer.
Lastly ... the lever on your bike is a hot start lever, NOT A COMPRESSION RELEASE. The compression release is internally operated on the cam automatically.
