Hi Everyone,

Because some of you have been asking...

I was out scouting some shooting we are doing at what remains of the old, grand Carlsbad Raceway. We will be using some of this in the new "The Carlsbad USGP:1980" film we will be showing a sneak peak at during "The Monsters of Motocross" event on 10/31.
www.MonstersOfMotocross.com

Looks like the actual film will be released early 2010 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Marty's special day.

I thought I would share some pics and a couple of short videos I shot with my iPhone on the way back to my truck.

Like the thread says...Mother Nature is winning...

On my way out I stopped and turned around to look back at what is left of Carlsbad. Pretty much the starting straight side of the track and some of the low-land turns and straights. I realized that I had video on my new 3Gs and shot a quick over-view...

I had also walked past this lone soldier...

We'll do our best to treat you right Mr. Moates...race on.

X1000

Looks to me that the whole place is still there? (just wishing out loud) it looks like they could bring it back if they got approval.....is it all still there?

Yes, Yes I know it would never happen in a million years but it would be a cool nostalgic part of carlsbad's history to restore it and maybe run select days when no one is working or are there too many houses around now?

Todd- Thanks for posting the photos. I can't wait for the outcome.
While I never raced Carlsbad, I did ride a practice day, or snuck out there, can't recall. Late sixties. I remember riding my mx bike on the drag strip.
Gnarly is the word that was invented to describe the place!

Sad to see it losing its identity.

On an unrelated note, Todd do you know when more MX Files will be available through Netflix?

Sad site to see. I drive by there quite a bit and always check it out. I raced there a lot from 1984 to 1994 or so. I also was there on the last official practice day they had. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for that, yet..........
for me she's still golden in my head.
The famed Carlsbad.
Attending the 1st "Hang Ten GP" race & sneaking in with my pals......
As a racer myself, just driving down was a big deal to me & the boyz........
As a factory guy doing well there over the many yrs..........
Tech inspection at the local mall.......
The freeway sign.........
The memories, people, etc., timeless to me.
In my head she still lives.............
Magical to me if you will........
Saddleback too, timeless..................
& to think I'm a stones throw from Indian Dunes, Muntz, Baymare........
"yeah I know my heads pretty full of it all........"

Progress? Go figure.........sad

I was just there also a couple weeks ago and snapped a bunch of the same photos. Funny thing, as I was walking back up the hill to my bike I looked back and there was a cop car with it's lights on pulled over on Melrose. And there was a cop on horseback walking along towards devi's drop. I thought that they were trying to find me! I got back on my bike and rode away quickly. Hard to believe Carlsbad freeway is now buried somewhere under the road and business park!

Carlsbad was mega... as much as you hated the place, you loved it. It is where legends were made. Muddy down below, dusty on top of the Carlsbad Freeway. The bumps never changed and you were riding on cement in the afternoon. God I loved the place...

I know this photo is not 1980, it's 79... Heikki Mikkola being chased by Bad Brad on the Kawasaki at the USGP. They both missed me by inches as they went by...

I was in the Marine Corps and was in Oceanside for a few months in the late eightys, I wanted to go out there, but never got to...

Thought it would always be there... boy was I wrong

Need to show these pictures to the Sierra Club.
A few more years and you wont even know a bike ever rolled a wheel over that terrain.
So much for permanent damaged caused by Off Roaders.

I wish I could see the digits on the LOP rider because it looks like he may be one of my racing mentors from the late 70's and early 80's., Cole Knight.

Good stuff, Todd.

I went to several of the USGPs there, probably including that year that anniebertmojo has the photos from, but sadly, I missed the year that Marty won it. I do remember how huge it was that an American, won, though.

I need to rent On Any Sunday 2 and check it out again. I think there's a very brief shot of me while I walking up a hill out of the pits. I remember walking up the hill, looking up and seeing a camera, and when I saw it, I got a quick peek, but need to back and look at it again to confirm. Unfortunately we're all spoiled by remote controls now. They don't have those in the theater where I saw it. wink
