After watching ESPN's poor broadcasting of this year's XGames Best Whip comp in Munich, I couldn't help but bring into question the truth that has long endured throughout this competition, particularly because I am an avid fan of spectating disgusting whips that hopefully have me turning my head nearly upside down and cringing simultaneously in fear that this backwards facing turndown might not be coming back around in time.

Given the abstract nature of a fat whip, who is to say one style of a whip is better than another?

Unfortunately, panic revving and throwing superman backflips has seemingly helped the handful of competitors who obviously understand the importance of pleasing and entertaining the people who are doing the actual voting ("fans"). If this voting were left up to a more knowledgeable board, it would be the technicalities and individuality within the whips that defined their appropriate scores more so than sketchiness and NGAF. Maybe this event could carry a high level of prestige among the riders, both FMX and MX, if they felt it was judged fairly and not so subjectively because we all know that the whip has and will remain a universally practiced statement of style and skill combined. Maybe it is just not a thing to be competed over and voted on at all?
