Ive been running c-12 straight up but its getting hard to get in my area. about 68 bucks for 5 gallons. should i run 50/50 with pump fuel? ive got a couple 2009's mainly stock but one has vforce and a pipe.
The Shop
I don't really get this expensive fluids? Really necessary for 99.9% of us? Love the smell though!
Maybe you should ask MXA, or more easily search their site. They seems to be rather on top of these things and also answer mails (Jody has answer a couple of mine), or try Thumpertalk. They have a YZ250 forum where you can ask. I usually succeed more there than here with my tech questions.
Damn, I'm on thing ice here...
Just saying of course!
Here in CA I was told by, of all places Malcolm Smith Motorsports that unless I have a license of some kind related to having a race team or a pro license I was not allowed to buy it at all. Honestly I don't know what kind of license I needed to have to buy C12 and don't remember the details so im not hating on MSM I was not able as a moto consumer to BUY C12 or and leaded racegas. To hear that from the very same dealership that broke the lead ban law-gate and sold mini's I was pretty suprised.
That and since not as many people are riding 2 strokes as they did 4 years ago it is hard to find good racegas .... the market for moto shrunk and Im sure companiues like VP have scaled down production and raised prices, thus causing parts managers not to order it.
It'sd hard to find for real in SOCAL....unless I am looking in the wrong places all my local dealerships do not carry it either. At 68 bucks a gallon that is ridiculous I remember when it was 45 bucks 5 years ago....sheesh!
Anyone have any input on how to get it at a decent price with availibility?..... I love how much cleaner and crisper my bike runs on that stuff! Recently ran out of a 5 gal of MR2 ....dam good stuff!
Hate to semi hijack but anyone have opinions on these three things?
Octane Booster.....does it really work or is it a gimmick
Lead Substitutes....(again) does it really work or is it a gimmick
AvGas.....Is it worth the effort? Is octane booster a better solution?
Pit Row
We are lucky here in Charlotte that Cam 2 100 is available at most gas stations at $7 a gallon. I run it 50/50 with high test.
I'd say unless your bike has raised compression or you cannot buy real non-ethanol 93 octane pump fuel, you don't need special fuel in the stock two stroke.
Lots of modern 2 strokes need a bit of an Octane boost to run correctly if they are jetted 'lean and mean' and are ran hard, especially when a track has lots of traction. Pump fuel in the USA is of very low quality. The lead and extra O2 that some of the race fuels bring to the table doesn't hurt either. Also jetting is a lot more consistent because pump fuel, is so unconsistent.
Anyways, C-12 runs fantastic and ran at 50% it generally runs great. Pricey and hard to get around here though. I also got good economy on C-12.
I burn a lot of fuel and need to save money and am VERY happy w/ AVGAS 100LL. I run 3.5g AVGAS w/ 1.5g Super in my 190 compression engine. Price is right, consistency is there, lead is there, and it gives me the compression bump I need. When you get blatantly too much Octane for a specific engine configuration the bike can feel a bit softer. Also AVGAS ran straight can get some poor mpg. Something to do w/ all light-ends or something. Adding a bid of pump fuel corrects that completely in my experience.
Many people claim all kinds of strange reasons why AVGAS doesn't work. I'm hear to tell you they are wrong. In fact many race fuels are nothing but AVGAS100LL w/ Octane boosters and other additives added in.
