1983 Saddleback AMA National: Watching the 12 riders who cleared the "step up" jump on Suicide Mountain.

"The 1983 honor roll of riders who had etched their names in moto history included Jeff Ward (125), Phil Larson (500), Eric Eaton (500), Goat Breker (500), Broc Glover (500), Warren Reid (500), Danny Chandler (500), Billy Liles (250), Bob Hannah (250), Ricky Johnson (250), Mike Bell (250) and Tom Carson (250). Only 12 riders cleared the jump out of the 160 riders entered that day."

Whole story is here: MXA Suicide Mountain

My top racing memory would have to be JS battling RC at Red Bud in 2007 (I believe). They were on a level of their own that day and battled from start to finish until they got too close in one of the last corners and JS got stuck in a rut and went over the bars. It happened right in front of me and then I see the photo in the next month's magazines... it was awesome.

The other one would be watching Stew come back to beat Chad Reed at the Indianapolis Supercross in 2009-ish. I got a photo of Chad on one of the jumps from the stands, and then the next month's Dirt Rider magazine had the same photo from the same jump, but taken from the infield. If you looked close, you could see me in the stands taking the same damn photo from the other side, lol. I'll see if I can find the photos tonight haha
I was right there as well. I bet we were standing next to each other.

Small world and one hell of a race. RC just refused to lose that day. He got lucky, but he plugged away at James all day.

When JG33 got the tuff block cover caught in his rear rotor and it locked up nearly sending him over the bars before the back break released again.

I've personally known josh for years and I was so excited to see him two laps away from the biggest win of his life, then for .5 seconds it was almost thrown away. My heart stopped and I couldn't breathe. When the wheel broke free again I screamed louder then I have ever screamed in my life.

That night in 2009 is something that will never leave my memory

Jason McCormick's 125 moto win at Washougal in '99. The place was going nuts, and RC (a distant second) crossed the line thinking he had won the moto & overall, only to see Chad Watts shaking his head.

Watching privateer Rick Ryan win the 1987 Daytona Supercross.
Watching George Holland and Eric Kehoe battle on 125's at Gatorback.
Listening to what sounded like the entire Anaheim crowd boo RC when him and Pastrana tangled. Smh
Watching Don Kudalski do one hand wheelies in practice at Hyatt Cycle park in 1976.

And as far as a moment that always stands out, the Yamaha promo video with justin buckelew ripping on a YZ80. I have no idea why, it just stuck with me.

My dad and I were on the outside of the first turn, and this happened right in front of us. We both thought we just witnessed someone either become a paraplegic or die right before our eyes. Will never be able to get the sound of that bike wadding up out of my head.

What about the race where alessi went down over the roller and pretty much had the whole field run him over while unconscious? Which year and round was that? I remember watching that thinking there is no way he is going to survive that..

This! Riding in the San Fernando Valley hills. My brother took this picture as a police helicopter was landing to bust us.
As for pros the epic battle between RJ and Bailey as it unfolded before my eyes.

So many but 1978 watching THE MAN pretty much wheelie the entire track, lap after lap., at Farliegh Castle. His front spokes were shredded. Bad Brad won the day which is another never forget moment. Just couldn't believe a dirt bike could be ridden so commandingly.

I'm not sure what year it was, (Was pretty young).. but I have 3 that immediately popped into my head.

when Mc went from deadlast to win at anahiem, one of the best performances ive ever seen.

The battle between Mc and doug henry in las vegas before henry tangled with larracco after the whoops 98 or 99 i think.

When casey lytle got landed on over the triple at anahiem and his arm broke...i remember my dad saying (He's done, like two seconds after it happend) still bummed on that.. he was fast

Many great ones listed here, and I was lucky to witness many of them. One thing I'll never forget seeing was when Shane Tritller Cased the big locker room double in Vegas '94, does a big flying W to summer salt, and the lands perfectly on the back of Huffman's bike as he perfectly downsides the same double. Huffy rolls to the bottom of the landing and pulls over and looks at ST like "WTF? How'd you get there?" . To bad there's no video of it, it was unbelievabe.

I had always heard it was a section similar to Pontiac. Up into the stands. Either way, crazy story.

For me it is basically one of the first times i got to see Ricky Carmichael on a video, and usa mx in general. It was the late 90's and i was still really young at the time. There was no internet acces either so the only way we got to see stuff from USA was out of magazines. (I had this subscription on Motocross Action i believe, i couldn't even read english at that age haha). Anyway for my 7th birthday my dad ordered this VHS tape from USA called Terrafirma 4 or 5 not sure which one it was. I must have watched that tape a million times by now. They had this segment where they did a review of the 1998 Outdoor season and i was just blown away. I eventually uploaded it to my youtube so i will post it here for you guys to enjoy.

I had just picked up my first big bike, brand new off the floor yz250h and was on the edge of town in a large vacant sand lot with some small hills mixed in, I knew local guys rode there often as I had passed this place prior.

I unloaded and was dorking around trying to break it in and thinking I was something when a couple of A guys showed up on yz465s.

Number 5 and no number. Doug McNiel and Arlo Englund. I learned later of course that Arlo was not just a local A rider.

They were very cool and by the end of the day we had laid out as good a track as that lot would ever see and over the next few weeks I got to know them well.

Both were great riders however Arlo was unbelievable on that big bike. I'll never forget the talent but more than that they were good people.

Most Moto people are.

RJ breaking his wrist in 1989 and prematurely ending his career. Excluding 1989, he had three more years of title contending. He changed the game and should be spoke with all time greats Hannah, McGrath, RC, Bubba and RV.

Two Canard moments. First, 2008, with just a few laps left in the season, Canard takes out Vilopoto at the Finishing Gate to win the championship. The other, Purcell's dnf combined with Canard's win, completing an incredible championship comeback in 2010.

Ok yeah your right,

1998 MXDN, Foxhills Moto Park, Uk

Getting to see RC in Saturday practise (when it was sunny & dry) whip it flat for the crowd, getting to hear that PC Kawasaki kx 125 scream up those hills and smell that two stroke. Also when all was done on that wet Sunday, getting to walk into team USA pits and see RC just chilling, he went into the trailer and came back out with some goggles and a signed poster for my friend (the poster was the one of him in 97, axo gear, whipping it). He still has those goggles (team usa oakley if i remember correctly), caked in mud.

Obviously seeing British rider Rob Herring holeshot moto 1 and hearing the air horns and crowd go wild is an awesome memory too from that weekend.

OH! waking up at around 3am in my tent, literally floating in water......not so good

1980 Southwick MX National, first race I ever attended. Wet, muddy day, blew my mind completely. Was hooked.

1989 Unadilla MX National, cold, rainy day in October. Watching Doug Henry as a privateer rip through the pack after a bad start on a whipped YZ125 with fenders and sideplates flapping around and making it to the top five. It was at that moment I realized he was going to accomplish what the rest of us just dreamed about.

The mx momment I'll never forget was in 1984 during practice at a big race. I was cutting the track to try and figure out a section in front of the grand stands when I ducked under the banners and my visor caught yhem yanking me off the bike and it ghost rode the bike about 20 feet. I got off the ground and was running to my bike when I lookec up and a whole section of people were laughing at me.

Magoo at "Little Oakie" mx track, which was just a local race at a small track by Fresno on a Saturday night. While effortlessly winning the pro race, Magoo was doing some amazing showboating over the jumps the entire night. After the race, he had a boatload of folks in his pits and he was down to earth and friendly with everyone.
