The Bomber was a bad mofo for sure. You don't see as many bent bars today as back in the day though. Either they make 'em better now or I'm just not that observant.

You'd be hard pressed to find one who would ride on the kind of tracks they do with malfunctioning equipment. It's already hard enough to navigate a 21st century Supercross track on a bike in perfect condition! But, if I had to put my money on a guy to do this, The Dung would in a heartbeat if the championship were on the line, the guy rode with a broken collar bone! See Roger DeCoster quote about RD5.

When Barnett was working the SX tracks, I took my gas tank from my 81 RM125 for him to sign at the St louis round. Don't try this now, I don't think you could get a gas tank in the front gate anymore. He offered me a spare cylinder for it and gave me his phone number. I actually never took him up on it. I felt I didn't need it and didn't want to take advantage of the offer.

Barnett is a cool dude for sure. Back in the day though somebody always had a big chunk of pipe as a cheater bar to straighten bars. If you never finished a race with bent bars you were a serious quitter. #steelbarssuckass

Bogle would since he has so much raw emotion.

I'd forsure say Villo. Stew has raced with a bent up bike a time or two.

Dungey raced with a broken collar bone. Brayton has been racing with a jacked up leg. Hanny raced with a broken wrist last year and (at least) one broken ankle this year. Reed fell from 3 stories up and still raced to a top 10. I'm an old schooler too, but I don't think some of you give the kids today enough credit.

I agree.....funny how some of the OS riders mention things like putting nails in their boots before motos......because they enjoyed the pain. Then went back to the box van , drank a couple beers and smoked a 1/2 pack of sigs , wearing skin tight gym shorts combing their feathered hair with a goodies comb.

I'm 44yrs old....some what OS.....and that shit cracks me up.

Don't think you'll see todays bars being able to bend like that.

That was at Lake Whitney in 1982. Barnett rode hard with a bent bike, but Jeff Ward ended up with his very first national win.

At Whitney either Hannah, or Barnett finished a moto missing a foot peg. Rode with his foot on the clutch.

Was it Wise who stuck his broken bar behind the number plate and finished a Dallas SX?

Of course those guys were tough back then, but like Jeffro said, there are plenty of people today who are just as hard. Nostalgia is a powerful hallucinogen. A racer is a racer no matter what decade or century you are in.

Hey I once rode my street bike home with no right foot peg and no front brakes after crashing. OK not tough just desperate.

It was Hannah. I was in the pits when he was chewing out one of the Yamaha guys after that moto.

Thought it was, but I was probably pretty stoned at the time, and remembering even going is an accomplishment.

Hell, wasn't racing with one peg pretty much a normal occurrence for Marty Tripes?

Metcalf rode with a handlebar just like that at Mt. Morris in (I think) '06 or so. RC rode almost a full moto at Budds Creek in '01 with a front end that was so twisted up you could see how out of alignment it was. And of course Villo rode a moto last year with his whole bike shedding parts. Ryno rode the second moto at Southwick in '03 with a broken leg.

Barnett was a core guy, but there are still some tough hombres in this sport. Always have been, always will be.

I once raced with a wasp in my jersey stinging the shit out of me. I rode faster than I ever had before.

Now I always put a wasp down my jersey before I head to the starting line.

Magoo.......the guy was a beast! Cartwheel, wad it up, get back on & twist it!

I've seen that one photo of him on here before, clutch side is yanged down, hand on the bent part at speed.

Classic.

maybe some-one that's better at posting pics can find it?

Pussification is throughout the generations sure the the old guys were toughter than the new generation of whiners as was the same before them. Care to hold up any of our old school heros to the WWII generation. Before that it was the great depression and so on. Yes the younger you are the more technology and society has made you a pussy. Now get over it and slap on you earings skinny jeans flatbill listen to some rap that 14 year old girls like and tell yourself how hard you really are.

In the early 2000's, I was wearing a fresh pair of the new vented Thor gear at Bithlo in Florida. In the back sand section, I was roosted on the first lap. A minute later, I realized the roost was full of huge, pissed off fire ants that I would be afraid to even burn with a magnifying glass. I finished the moto, and I wouldn't doubt it made me ride faster. I still have somewhat visible scars on my legs. I was 12 years old.

I would think Dungey would ride like that. That kid doesn't get nearly the respect he should for how tough and determined he really is.

Carmichael did a few years back, I remember him crashing out in a heat race, getting up and hitting the 1st tripple he came too with obviously badly bend bars. He did pull up after a couple of sections though

Long story short I tangled with a guy in the first corner at a L.L. qualifier, I tried playing catch up, and made the mistake of going for a 4th gear triple step up ( no one else was really going for it because it had rained the past two days and the ruts up the lip made your pegs drag) As I was going up the lip my pegs dragged and my foot popped off...I was sent sailing through the air, no feet, full loop out. The bike shot out from under me when I landed. I hoped on the bike with full adrenaline and attempted to race with the bike like this, but after hitting one double I realized I had zero chance...weekend was done
