man with all the crashes this weekend at Arlington, im surprised more guys dont add a little more protection to their bodies. I dont believe i rolling out in every piece thats available or forcing riders to wear something they feel will impair their ability to ride

but they all wear knee braces and these limit leg movement and still dont prevent knee injury

some guys wear a neck braces but this is proving to be one of the best items to prevent neck injury

but im surprised so few people wear a chest protectors. that hit webb took is a highlight for wearing one

Actually I think with the addition of thin hardshell chest protectors to most gear companies line ups, a lot more guys are wearing them than ever before. I think Cooper actually wears one, you can subtly make it out when he's on the line.

Most wear one of some kind under the jersey but they’re so thin these days. I started running the fly version recently but have been eyeing the RXR air

Has anyone seen what they wear in MotoGP and F1? I know F1 is heavily mandated and some people bitched and moaned but they health of the competitors is likely pretty connected to the health of the sport.

Im not sure how much is mandated in MotoGP but they seem to all wear a whole bunch of protective gear. And they crash a Lot less than Supercross riders do.

Could a program similar to this be implemented in Supercross? this would move technology, materials, functional protection and functionality of protective forward in a way that is tested by the highest levels of the sport.

The NFL is a classically socialist American sport and they are working to make it safer because a safer sport is a benefit. Motocross is dangerous obviously but so is F1, MotoGP and the NFL and they take bold steps to make it safer. Sometimes people moan and groan and RynoGlobal would but it takes a bold company to make bold decisions for the health of the riders and the sport.

Air Bag system became mandatory for MotoGP one or two years ago. Chestprotectors are mandatory in MXGP.

I went stomach first into a waist-high fence after my rear brake line failed which I didn’t anticipate. My chest protector shattered but I was fine besides some loss of air. I swear I’m never hitting the track again without one since.

I always cringe when guys go down in the first turn without chest protectors. Yikes

Wearing a chest and back protector is a no brainer since they've gotten so much slimmer and lighter. I get arguments agianst neck and knee braces if they limit your mobility (I stopped wearing neck brace because I have short neck and it influenced my body position on the bike).
I wear a foam protector (ortema) for the back and it definitly works. I had a high sider and landed on my ass/back and smashed my helmet in. Result: a scar on my ass that'll stay and two days in the hospital because the CT scan indicated brain bleeding. My back: not even a scratch or any soreness.

RXR recently released their newest chest protector. It’s thinner than ever and extremely comfortable. I wish they’d catch on a little more. Only a couple pros that I know of use their products.

To each his own. Personally, I always dressed for the crash, not the ride.

I can relate. I recently bought a Seven under-the-jersey vest and was using it in practice, over the summer. I wear a Thor Sentinel over-the-jersey hard protector for races. I had a hard crash where I hit my chest, tore the cartlidge in my ribs etc. Just now finally back to being able to ride and that happened around Halloween. Anyways, I feel like the hard outer chest protector would have helped. So I learned my lesson and will be wearing it. It's just not worth it.

The thing I see missing is quality shoulder protection. The old Fox Roost 2 and the HRP Flak Jak offered excellent shoulder protection. I wore the Fox for many years/crashes with no injuries. Swapped to AXO Pentagon and broke 3 collarbones within 4 years.

As someone who wore HRP chest protectors for many years, I really miss the shoulder protection those things offered.

I wear it all. Knee braces, neck brace, chest protector, and padded compression shorts. Our son has to do the same, or else I won't let him ride. With all of the choices now days and comfortable options, the only excuse for not wearing one is simply cool factor (or lack of cool factor). And I don't want to hear about the expense of it. Its one of the cheapest safety protection gear that can be bought compared to knee braces, neck braces, helmets, and boots. I used to not wear one out here in AZ because it was pretty hot in the summer time. But when KC died in the desert on a rip to the tip run when he crashed into a cactus, and punctured a lung which then led to him dying by choking on his own blood, I came to the obvious conclusion that I needed to have as much protection on my body as possible.

The bottom line is, I gotta work to support my family. My family needs me for many other reasons. I'm going to do everything possible to protect myself.

Who makes the thinnest chest protector currently? The RXR caught my eye.

I used to wear one back on 80s but got away from it for comfort and to look cool. I would like an extremely thin plastic chest protector to put under my jerseys. Thanks for the point in the right direction!

I’m a fan of the Leatt, with shoulder protection. Agree it’s personal preference, but I gotta be at work on Monday as well!

You'd think sponsored riders would want to protect their investment and try to limit injuries ?

I just ordered the A-10 and the Leatt 5.5 HD Pro to compare and the Leatt fit much more comfortably for me. The A-10's rib protectors dug into my hip bones when I moved side to side like you would when cornering no matter how much I adjusted it. And the Leatt seemed to have a little more padding on the inside and more coverage of the back. I would check it out!

a quick addition to this thread, the TLD KTM team makes it mandatory for their racers to wear a hardshell chest protector (front only, but obviously can wear front&back). It's written into their contracts.

I think more protection is great. But forced protection? These are professionals we are talking about here.

I say we leave it to the professional to decide if he needs additional protection or not. They are adults you know?

The same people crying for forced protection and forced this/forced that will tell you the sport is getting too expensive for people to get into. Lol

they are already forced to wear protective gear. I'm pretty anti government and anti rules but Imo since it is a professional sport ran by a private organization they have the right to mandate the riders wear whatever protective gear they want.

This is why I went back to an RXR. While the Leatt did provide protection, it broke apart and was junk after this. While I can’t be certain, I feel the RXR would’ve lived to see another moto. Either way, it would’ve been worse if I had nothing on at all.

Forced helmets forced boots already. Or do you think open it right up?

Look at other professional sports and see what is forced... it’s a professional sport they can afford it. It doesn’t mean it becomes forced at a local level but it does set the best example possible.

Do you think the Halo in F1 is a team choice or forced by the organizers? As someone pointed out the motoGP protection is mandated? Do you think NFL shoulder pads and helmets are a choice? Or forced. I guess you disagree with all these choices that protect the athletes?

If this or something like this became mandatory in professional supercross racing it would very quickly be an afterthought.

Also it would make the riders look badass.

Take out all the jumps, the motorbikes and the speed and the NFL players wear more mandated protection running around on the grass underneath. A professional sport needs set a professional standard and this will go a ways to getting there.

Exactly, it’s in the business interest of the private organization to keep their riders healthy.
