We were set to do two days of racing this weekend at speedworld and just before leaving received word that speedworld has been forced to shut its doors permanently.Sucks, we have lost another track. Apparently they are seeking a new location.
I grew up racing out there in AZ... it is/was a great track and I have had a lot of fun (and a little pain) riding out there!
From Sppedworld's facebook page:
"Despite the best efforts by Speedworld MX, Maricopa County and Arizona State Land Dept. have been unable to issue proper permits and permission, and we will be unable to race this weekend. We hope to reschedule at a future date before Speedworld relocates. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this causes."

KLM85: you are right on the money with the permitting issue. Who ultimately started the conversation, I don't know, but I heard it involved a land use plan from something stupid like 1969.
From what I understand, none of the structures and dirt moving operations had any permits. Dan argued all the way to court that the track changes were just part of maintaining a MX track, and the "structures" were just temporary additions and not permanent.
This ongoing battle actually made the AZ Rebublic newspaper several times, pretty shitty that the County cannot give a little more and make this business and public attraction feasible.
The area is pretty remote, in an area with regional landfills, Luke AFB auxiliary airstrips, car test tracks, etc.. The residents that are in the area moved to the area because it was cheap land and had acreage. The reason it was cheap land to begin with was for the same reasons Speedworld should be allowed to stay- the area use was consistent with the surrounding uses which was not always ideal for residential use. You get what you pay for, don't bitch to the County and make them look for reason to shut it down and stop your bitching.
maybe he didn't follow the rules and maybe our Government is inept , Speedworld probably got lucky the economy tanked and they were able to get a few more years out of it. it is possible the new laws allowing the state to trade land differently could be an underlying issue.
like TFS always said, "Follow the Money"
