We were set to do two days of racing this weekend at speedworld and just before leaving received word that speedworld has been forced to shut its doors permanently.Sucks, we have lost another track. Apparently they are seeking a new location.

No Way!!!

I grew up racing out there in AZ... it is/was a great track and I have had a lot of fun (and a little pain) riding out there!

I had read they were closing in May to relocate

From Sppedworld's facebook page:

"Despite the best efforts by Speedworld MX, Maricopa County and Arizona State Land Dept. have been unable to issue proper permits and permission, and we will be unable to race this weekend. We hope to reschedule at a future date before Speedworld relocates. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this causes."

They aren't closed just yet. They are allowed to have 30 more events before they close so they are going to pick and chose them wisely.

I heard they were not purchasing proper race insurance for their events, hence the county won't issue permits.

All I know is that we were told the mx track was closed. No more practice or races on the mx side.

Yeah, I know open practice for MX is done because that counts as an event for them and they want to try and save as many days as possible for races. Hal Sanguinetti (from Speedworld) was at my work earlier this week telling me everything that is going on. I'll see if I can find more out for you.

The counties out here are always complaining about dust but I thought the disagreement came on an expansion they did a few years ago and the county came in out of nowhere and said they didn't have the proper permits for it and wanted them to jump through an impossible set of tasks to get legit. I'm sure its just some dickbag developer who wants to build close and knows his land is worth less with a track so he gets his fluffer at the county to raise a stink.

Thanks Torco. I know they are considering moving, but you know how that goes...
KLM85: you are right on the money with the permitting issue. Who ultimately started the conversation, I don't know, but I heard it involved a land use plan from something stupid like 1969.

Guys there are things going on a lot of people are just guessing. I like Dan and I love to ride Speedworld but even though we don't like some laws put in place they are there to follow and everyone had to follow them. It is Maricopa County and Arizona State Land Dept. choice becaue they own the property. Just like if you owned a house and rented it out if your renters are not doing things right by you, you can evict. Lets just hope Dan gets a new place and follows the rules. There not always fun or right but they have to be followed or this happens.

This news is heart breaking... We love that place other than it being ridiculously expensive to ride there for a family of four, but that's pretty much any track these days..

Maricopa County reviewed satellite images over the past 20 years, and saw numerous additional "structures" as well as all of the track changes/additions/modifications/expansions.

From what I understand, none of the structures and dirt moving operations had any permits. Dan argued all the way to court that the track changes were just part of maintaining a MX track, and the "structures" were just temporary additions and not permanent.

This ongoing battle actually made the AZ Rebublic newspaper several times, pretty shitty that the County cannot give a little more and make this business and public attraction feasible.

The area is pretty remote, in an area with regional landfills, Luke AFB auxiliary airstrips, car test tracks, etc.. The residents that are in the area moved to the area because it was cheap land and had acreage. The reason it was cheap land to begin with was for the same reasons Speedworld should be allowed to stay- the area use was consistent with the surrounding uses which was not always ideal for residential use. You get what you pay for, don't bitch to the County and make them look for reason to shut it down and stop your bitching.

Dan has had a pretty good run out there, With all the homes being built the encroachment and closing was just a matter of time.

maybe he didn't follow the rules and maybe our Government is inept , Speedworld probably got lucky the economy tanked and they were able to get a few more years out of it. it is possible the new laws allowing the state to trade land differently could be an underlying issue.

like TFS always said, "Follow the Money"

Man, that sucks. I drove out there a couple of years ago and did a vintage national that had Brad Lackey, Dave Coupe etc. What a great place. Haven't been back, though I have been to ACP every year since and we have a lot of fun in AZ. The story sounds a lot like what happened to another legendary track that had the likes of Emig, Pastrana, Reynard and on and on. It was 59th and Douglas in OKC. Tons O' history not unlike Speedworld that was a victim to government type issues(although that land is owned by the USAF.) I just hate to hear stuff like this. I'll be following its progress.

yeah, I read about that on their FB page. SUCKS!!! Hopefully they will find a new location and open up an even better track.
