Depending on how you plan on painting it, it can still be quite costly. Best way is to sandblast and refinish with automotive grade paint. I use PPG's DP line of epoxy primer and Glasurit single stage urethane for solid non metallic colors. Benefits over powdercoating is that it is still a durable finish yet easy to strip or sandblast in the future to remove it. Powdercoat is a pain to strip. Go to page 4 here.

i just started to scuff the frame with scotch brite. when you say paint stripper....what exactly do you mean? not really trying to strip the frame to bare metal?

thanks lumpy

used clear thick numberplate background material to make frame guards in the high wear areas.

haha im really just trying to do a rattle can special!
In that case make sure the frame is as clean as possible. When using a scuff pad, wet it and add some Comet or Ajax cleaner with it to help get the cracks and crevices. Check the local auto parts store for some Dupli Color paint. Better than Krylon and a good choice of colors.

Clean clean clean. Then use a good quality primer and a good quality paint. LIGHT coats to avoid runs and drips. Take your time and it will come out great. I've done many.

I had rattle canned mine a couple times so I wanted to 100% strip it. If you feather all of the edges smooth it will come out ok.

Dont paint it to thick and it wont run .... clean it well and it wont fish eye.

several coats of Clear over is also a good idea.

oh and I use Krylon because it has a thick tough plastic like finish.

Use Rustoleum....much better spray paint than Krylon....won't give you the "orange peel" texture...
found rustoleum thin and it ran easily

Painted mine with Rustoleum semi-gloss black and it came out really good. Scuff it good, feather the rough spots smooth, and clean the heck out of it. I didn't use any primer, just didn't take it to the bare metal. Cleaned it with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.
I put on probably 5 light coats, and have had no flaking or peeling. The paint has rubbed off where my boots contact the frame, just like the original paint did. Doesn't bother me, though. Some grip tape, clear vinyl, or frame guards could prevent this. I'll just touch it up sometime, though. Good luck!

after liquid stripping my frame down to bare metal and seeing the bluing I must say it was tempting not to just clear coat it.

i did a rattel can job on a frame when i was 15 its came out ok but it lasted about 2 rides. newman has the best idea which is get it blasted and powdercoat or use automotive grade paint. you can get media blasters and media on harbor frieght cheap and there great for cleaning parts obviously depending on what media you use. if not klean strip is available at Home depot that works good just wear gloves.IMO do it right once otherwise you will be doing it again. spend a few extra bucks and get it powdercoated or find a buddy with an auto body shop who will do it on the side

I used to repaint my frames with rattle cans and it came out fine. Obviously not as good as a professional paint job or powdercoating.

I just put multiple coats of the color and some clear coat and made sure I used grip tape or clear background in the areas that wear the fastest. I also used the clear on the skid plate and fram guards to help out the next time I painted them.

I had my frame powdercoated for 120 bucks and it was worth it. I didnt want to do it on my own and would have spent about half as much with rattle cans. Sometimes your time and energy spent is well worth paying someone else to do it.

I had a 2000 KX 250 back in that I turned into a Simple Green clone. I scuffed the frame with red scotch brite pad then hit it with Bull dog paint prep surfacer and the sealed it. Finished it off with Red and the Simple green graphics Paint lasted til well after I sold the bike. All with a rattle can. PREP PREP PREP is the key.

I sandblasted then painted my 93' KX125 with Imron. To say the least, it held up very well.

The 94' CR125 I'm "restoring", I soda blasted and rattle canned it. I'll end up stripping it again and shooting it with Imron when I'm ready to paint my CR500.
