another + for the 05-08 Honda. Very very good bikes. I was lured to the dark side and bought a 16 ktm because I thought the grass was greener, but for me it wasn't. That old Honda with suspension set up for you is top shelf.

The only opinion that you wont find that differs much here , is that 04-05 rmz and kxfs , were probably the worst production bikes ever ... someone should be paying you to take them off their hands ...

With that said i do not own a crf but my best friend and his dad both have 07 crfs ... he still races it in 30+ open and qualified for lorettas last year on it ... his father and him said they will keep the bikes untill they are forced to buy new ones ... i have rode them both .. best bang for your buck those are awesome used bikes with honda reliablity that you cant beat

I had to reply just because of this post alone. You're gonna find a million different opinions, But owning many of these bikes myself I feel the need to weigh in. First I loooooooooved my 07 crf450. In fact I love it so much that sight unseen I went and plopped down my hard earned money on a pristine 2012 crf450 off the showroom floor. Suspension went straight to ENZO before I even rode it. I literally hated the 2012 so much that I got out of racing for awhile. I was pretty bitter that it was the first brand spanking new bike I had ever bought and it was as bad as it was. People say, go slow to go faster but the 2012 took that mantra wayyy too seriously. The motor felt like a 250f compared to my 07. No power, no torque....it was smooth....but it was smooth cause it had no hit. Plus the 12 was the most unsettled bike I have ever ridden.....thing felt like I was riding on a skittish cat across the track. I tried linkage, triples......I did everything in my power to make it an 07 and was bummed with the money I dropped. Soooooo from my experience, go 07-08. Stable, great motors, great handling. It just rides the way a dirt bike should. It does what you want it to, and was never unpredictable. I also am a bigger rider at 6'3". And I say all that not just to hate on the 2012, but because it is my honest to God opinion and I feel its my obligation to give it because I wish I would have heard some more negative before I bought it. The more research I did, the more I found I wasn't alone.....but it was too late. But props to the people that like that chassis.....cause they can be had for little to nothing.

FWIW After pitching the 12.......I wanted to light it on fire but I just took a loss on it instead, but I got a 13 KX450. I was never a Kawi guy but I really loved that bike. I always said it felt like a more refined 07-08 crf450. Motor was an animal. I would say the 07-08 was a little more nimble....I did triples and linkage on the 13 and it turned out to be probably one of my favorite dirt bikes. Being a big guy it never bothered me to throw a bike around.....I just want it to stay put when I tell it to stay. That might be out of your price range, but def a very good bike also.
As mentioned everyone has different experiences. Owned an 09 model that had MDK (local in SJ) suspension & still own a 10 model that FC did the suspension work. Since FC did a lot of R&D work with the 09-12 CRF450r chassis / suspension they have very good specs for it.
In stock trim I agree these models aren't very good off the showroom floor, but can be made into very good mx bikes with some mods.
I know they get a bad rap on the engine power as well. As a vet mx rider all I did was buy a like new TI Yosh RS4 on CL for $250 with a $50 remap & it feels faster than my 05-08 models. It's a smoother powerband in comparison to the carb models, but effective IMHO.
Not sure if Pro Motocross.com still has the archives of the 2010 MX series where you can see CRF Hondas getting holeshots most of them by Andrew Short on an HRC model. Chad Reed also had success on the 11-12 models with him being very competitive & being in contention to win a couple of titles.
He had very good feedback about these models.

So bummed I sold this old workhorse. I was a smoker fan my whole life, and am back to mixing gas and kicking ass nowadays......but this one bike made me fall in love with 4 stroke while I was racing.

Sold a very clean 2008 CRF450 earlier this year for $2500. Had it listed for months before it finally sold.

That said, it was a great bike but I like my TC250 much better.

Hard to go wrong with the CRF. I'd also consider an RMZ450 or a YZ250.

06-08 Honda like said above, I personally fell in love with the 06 never rode a 07 450 but had a 07 250f with no complaints,

My fathers 08 is like a dream to ride but something about the steerin damper I believe I couldn't really get used to, if it was my bike it would have been taken off but second gear made up for that since it felt much more usable on the 08

How much are you looking to spend? I've never ridden one but if I were looking for a cheap 450 I would look at a fuel injected RMZ. Everyone seems to like the chassis and from what I've heard they are dead nuts reliable.

I had a 2012 Honda and I would stay away from it. Never had any mechanical troubles with it but it was just a sketchy bike. Felt like it was all over the place and there was nothing you could really do about that.

This is a screaming deal AND how one should buy a 450 now. Paying $10,000.00 for a new 450 is ludicrous.

If I was in the market this bike would be mine.

Had a 05 rmz450 I liked as well. Would switch bikes occasionally with my riding buddy (06 CRF 450). I'm 6'3" 185lbs and felt very comfortable cockpit wise on both. Also very impressed with the power the CRF makes completely bone stock. Suspension was great for stock.
